I did a little research and found the reason why Lemon suddenly became more popular with the writers in 1972. Instead of posting it here, though, I'm going to write a companion piece, which I hope to have posted on Monday.

John, that is an interesting point that I have not considered. A new group of writers who may have viewed the players' accomplishments in an entirely different (and more accurate) light.

The fact that the better of the two (Lemon) was eventually elected would seem to lend some credibility to this theory.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('318','Mike Hoban','John, that is an interesting point that I have not considered.
Interesting Michael. One point I can think of is the expansion of baseball in 1969. When the leagues both expanded they added a lot of new baseball writer voters, I'd assume. And while American League writers were probably swayed by the many years Reynolds pitched for the Yankees and won World Series, giving him a higher percentage each year over Lemon, with expansion (and a Yankee downcycle) a bunch of new voters probably looked at Lemon's season's differently, plus the fact that he was with the 1954 Indians, who they knew as the most winning team in history(up to that time). I'd guess that that Indian team didn't have a single HOF'er, and that Lemon picked up support from that.

Just speculating....
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('316','John Lease','Interesting Michael.
