La Noche de los Jonathan (The Night of the Jonathans)

Este miércoles 29 de abril parecía que las entradas pasaban y los Indios de Cleveland, amparados en el pitcheo de Fausto Carmona, se encaminaban a su segunda victoria al hilo sobre los Medias Rojas de Boston. Entonces los patirrojos dieron señales de vida. En el sexto inning, con los Indios arriba 5-0, Jason Bay negoció boleto luego de 2 outs. Mike Lowell trajo la anotación de Bay con doble a la izquierda y Jason Varitek puso el juego 5-2 con doble al right-center.

Los Medias Rojas que jugaron sin Kevin Youkilis (1b) por dolores en la espalda, ni Julio Lugo (ss) molestias en la rodilla, retomaron su forcejeo por la victoria ante el relevista Rafael Betancourt en el octavo inning. Luego de un out, Lowell y Varitek sonaron imparables. Jeff Bailey bateó un rolling de frente al antesalista Mark DeRosa que este no pudo controlar y se llenaron las bases. Allí apareció Jonathan Van Every y despachó sencillo a la derecha para colocar el juego 5-3. Jensen Lewis vino a enfrentar a al emergente J.D. Drew quien empujó la carrera de Varitek con rolling al cuadro. Jacoby Ellsbury igualó el marcador con sencillo al centro.

Como muestra de la inspiración que vive un equipo, cuando el relevista Manny DelCarmen se metió en problemas al llenar las bases con 2 boletos y un golpeado, Van Every apareció para lanzarse de cabeza y tomar un elevado de Grady Sizemore que amenazaba con caer entre detrás del primera y el segunda base quienes corrían desesperados en busca de la pelota.

Hideki Okajima mantuvo a raya a los Indios en el cierre del noveno. En el décimo volvió a aparecer Van Every con un estacazo que sobrevoló la cerca del centerfield en cuenta de 1-1. Boston ganaba 6-5. Era el mejor sueño hecho realidad para el jardinero de reserva de los patirrojos.

Van Every, un bateador zurdo, empezó la temporada en la lista de incapacitados con un tobillo torcido. Allí permaneció hasta el 24 de abril. Firmó con los Medias Rojas como agente libre de ligas menores luego de la temporada de 2007. Jugó 17 partidos con los Medias Rojas en 2008.

Me hizo recordar a Armando Ortiz con los Navegantes del Magallanes en la temporada 1969-70 de la liga venezolana de béisbol profesional. Ortiz siempre salía de la banca a decidir juegos como muestra de la química que había en aquel Magallanes. En la Serie del Caribe le bateó un jonrón a Miguel Cuellar, quién venía de ganar el Cy Young de la Liga Americana con marca de 23-11 , Magallanes venció a los Leones de Ponce (Puerto Rico) 3-1.

Jonathan Papelbon llegó en el cierre del décimo para lidiar con toda esa tensión de la diferencia mínima ante el anfitrión. Sobre todo al enfrentar a un bateador tan difícil como Sizemore.

Los Medias Rojas siguen dando señales de ser un equipo que juega con sus 25 peloteros. Si algunos se lesionan, los que vienen del banco le ponen tanto o más, como lo hicieron los dos Jonathan en este juego.

English Translation

This Wednesday April 29th, it seemed that the Cleveland Indians were going to get their second win in a row as Fausto Carmona was almost unhittable in the first 5 innings. Then the Red Sox showed they were alive. In the sixth frame, with Cleveland winning 5-0, Jason Bay walked after 2 outs. Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek hit consecutive doubles to put the score 5-2.

The Red Sox, who played without Kevin Youkilis (1b) because of sore back, nor Julio Lugo (ss) stiff knee, got back to keep fighting for the game in the eighth inning before the reliever Rafael Betancourt. After 1 out, Lowell and Varitek hit singles. Jeff Bailey batted a grounder to third base that Mark DeRosa couldn`t handle and therefore the bases were loaded. Jonathan Every hit a single to right field to set the score 5-3. Jensen Lewis came to face pinch hitter J.D. Drew who batted in Varitek’s run on a fielder choice grounder to the infield. Then Jacoby Ellsbury tied the score with a single to center field.

As a sample of the inspirational moment the Red Sox are experiencing, when Manny DelCarmen got into trouble in the eighth inning. After two outs he walked DeRosa and Ben Francisco, and hit Kelly Shoppach. Van Every appeared again to fly over the grass and catch a fly hit by Grady Sizemore. Dustin Pedroia and Bailey ran desperately behind looking for the ball that seemed was going to touch the ground.

Hideki Okajima closed the door to the Indians in the bottom of the ninth. After two outs in the tenth, Van Every appeared again and hit a home run over the center field fence, he was in a 1-1 count. It was the best dream come true for the backup outfielder of the Red Sox.

Van Every, a left-handed hitter, began the season in the disabled list with a sprained ankle and was activated on April 24th. He signed with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent following the 2007 season. He played 17 games for the Red Sox in the 2008 season.

He made me to remember Armando Ortíz a Magallanes Navigators outfielder in the 1969-70 season of the Venezuelan Winter League. Ortíz always was ready to come from the bench to decide games for that Magallanes. In the 1970 Caribbean Series, Ortiz hit a homerun against Mike Cuellar who had won the Cy Young award in 1969 with a 23-11 record. Magallanes defeated the Ponce Lions (Puerto Rico) 3-1 in the first game of the series.

Jonathan Papelbon came in the bottom of the tenth to deal with all of that tension of the tiniest advantage before the home club team and the fans. Most of all when the last batter was Sizemore.

The Red Sox keep sending signals of being a team that plays with all of its 25 players. If somebody gets hurt the one who comes from the bench plays as hard or harder as the two Jonathans did in this game.
