Credit due for a fine piece on a forgotten hero who was badly mistreated by the "Grand Old Game" to which he gave the better part of his life. My research convinced me that in the South there were many people who respected Phil in his later days; a certain small justice in that, though the efforts of his surviving kinfolk to have his name officially cleared by Major League baseball were sadly unavailing.

(I appealed on their behalf to a Sports Illustrated editor and noted Babe Ruth biographer, who replied curtly that not only was he unwilling to help, but he thought Douglas had deserved the punishment he got.)
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('20946','Tom Clark','Credit due for a fine piece on a forgotten hero who was badly mistreated by the \"Grand Old Game\" to which he gave the better part of his life.
My Father told me stories of listening to Saturday afternoon baseball games with Phil in Whitwell and how my grandmother and Phil sang in the choir together at the local Methodist church. He also told me how he was banned fom baseball for trying to get traded to another team. Obviously, not quite the entire story but it was Phil's chosen version to a young boy. My grandfather was Phil's first cousin and I have always been proud that my family once had a major league pitcher that pitched in the World Series and struck the Babe out. I am sad to read the whole story. Almost in tears as I think of the wasted talent and the troubled life that was filled with tragedy. Yet part of me wonders, did Phil tarnish the game more than Barry Bonds, Pete Rose, Mark McGwire, Lonnie Smith, Tim Raines,Roger Clemens.....
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('20699','Greg Douglas','My Father told me stories of listening to Saturday afternoon baseball games with Phil in Whitwell and how my grandmother and Phil sang in the choir together at the local Methodist church.
Phil Douglas is buried near wher I live. I am writing a series of articles for a local paper about him. Any comments or things you would like to share with the readers?
Thanks

Thanks, Jeff. If not a movie, at least a segment in a compelling HBO mini-series. ;-)
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('13031','Mike Lynch','Thanks, Jeff.
