Boras Innings Limits

August 25, 2012 by · 1 Comment

There have been countless excerpts written about the innings limit placed on Stephen Strasburg in 2012.  His own representative, Scott Boras, recently defended the Washington Nationals decision (GM Mike Rizzo) to shut down Strasburg once his pre-defined innings total is reached for the season.

Boras is best known for his outlandish free agent requests and infamous tactics used to elicit every dollar from teams.  The notorious representative contends that pitchers throwing 200+ innings from age 21-23 will have detrimental effect on their careers.  Boras also suggested the huge workload for Atlanta Braves LHP Steve Avery  in the 1990s had the direct consequence of prematurely derailing his career.

Using Boras’ model, this study includes age 19-23 year-old MLB pitchers since 1950:  260 total occurrences of 200+ innings seasons from 189 different pitchers.  The Factor12 Rating is listed in conjunction with their age and innings pitched.

What I found was that, on average, pitchers who throw a 200 inning season before age 24 will see their careers end by their early 30s.  Further, on average they will fail to throw a 200 inning season after age 30. Don Sutton, Greg Maddux, Tom Seaver, Bert Blyleven, and a few others are the rare outliers.  Below is all the gory details….

———————————————————————————————————————————————————–

18 pitchers compiled three or more 200+ IP seasons before age 24.  The majority of those pitchers, who incurred heavy workloads at such a young age, failed to have a 200+ IP season after age 29.  Also, the majority of those pitchers had their careers end by age 33.  Here is the breakdown of each of the 18 pitchers….

Dwight Gooden – career ended at age 35 — no 200+ IP season after 28.

Frank Tanana  - career ended at age 40, when he posted his 13th 200+ IP season.  Tanana logged over 1000+ innings by age 24, which almost certainly led to his shoulder injury in 1979.

Bert Blyleven (HOF) is an outlier, but he did miss most of 1982 and all of 1991.  Bert had no 200+IP seasons after age 38.

Clay Kirby – career ended at age 28 — no 200+ IP season after 26.

Dean Chance – career ended at age 30 — no 200+ IP season after 27.

Don Drysdale (HOF) – career ended at age 32 — no 200+ IP season after 31.

Denny McLain – career ended at age 28 — Two Cy Young Awards and last pitcher to win 30 games — no 200+ IP season after 27.

Don Gullett – career ended at age 27 — no 200+ IP season after 23.

Don Sutton (HOF) – career ended at age 43 — is a clear outlier on this list. 20 years of 200+IP, which is every year of his career except 1981 (strike shortened season) and 1987 and 1988, when he was 42 and 43 years old.

Fernando Valenzuela – career ended at age 36 — no 200+ IP season after 29.  Fernando threw 1800+ IP by Age 26 and was ineffective by age 25.

Gary Nolan – career ended at age 29 — no 200+ IP season after 28.

Catfish Hunter (HOF) – career ended at age 33 — no 200+ IP season after 30.

Joe Coleman – career ended at age 32 — no 200+ IP season after 28.

Ken Holtzman – career ended at age 33 — no 200+ IP season after 30.

Larry Dierker – career ended at age 30 — no 200+ IP season after 28.

Mike McCormick – career ended at age 32 — no 200+ IP season after 28.

Milt Pappas – career ended at age 34 — no 200+ IP season after 32.

Steve Avery – career ended at age 33 — no 200+ IP season after 23, entirely missed three seasons (age 30-32).

***Madison Bumgarner is on pace for 200+ IP in 2012.  This would be his second consecutive 200+ IP season at age 22.  The San Francisco Giants should be aware of this potential overuse.

One Response to “Boras Innings Limits”
  1. rdj3video says:

Does Boras realize nobody cares about Steve Avery? Nats are in a pennant race. They shouldn’t be so bold as to think Strasburg in future years will lead them to the postseason because they were delicate with him in 2012. My main contention is just to not get reckless with his arm.
