Repent Now Yankees, the End Is Near

by Ted Leavengood

As we searched for the Gate 2 entrance to queue up for the monument tour, a lonely crackpot stood with a sign, “Repent Now, There Is Only One Way.” As we walked past he yelled at any and all, “Only God can save you.” One of the three young Yankee fans in front of us asked his mates, “Yeah, but can God get the Yankees in the playoffs.”

Commenting on the Comments

by Josh Deitch

In the author’s opinion, one of the more underutilized tools at Seamheads is the “comments” tool. He takes the time to respond to some of his readers more prescient thoughts.

The Best (Players) of the Worst (Teams)

by Brian Joseph

The Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres are all suffering through brutal seasons. The Nationals (50-85) and Mariners (50-83) still need 13 wins before the close of the ‘08 season to avoid 100 losses and the Padres are not far behind at 51-82. None of the league’s worst teams this season have winning percentages below .350 but since the beginning of professional baseball, at least one team per decade has delivered a winning percentage below that mark. Here’s a look at the worst* team from each decade and the best player on the team that year (* = worst in terms of winning percentage only):

Notes From the Shadows of Cooperstown: Out East

by Gene Carney

ME AND ELIOT

My tribute to Eliot Asinof appeared in NOTES #350, not too long ago, and I do not need to reprint it here. Indeed, there is much about Asinof and Eight Men Out in my book, so much that I can recommend Burying the Black Sox as a companion to 8MO, or a the Making Of. “Six Hours,” my account of my 2003 visit with Asinof at his Ancramdale home (in #305), was surely the highlight of our relationship. But there was more, and here is the rest of the story.

The season is a little over a month away from being over, but some players are playing their hearts out and that deserves a spot in royalty. And some players don’t care.

Quick Cuts with Chris Berman

by Josh Deitch

For any fan of contemporary baseball, few calls are more recognizable than “back, back, back…gone.”  As a commentator, analyst, and personality, Chris Berman has formed a niche all to himself in today’s digital age.  From his booming voice and louder ties to his palpable enthusiasm for all things sports, few broadcasters are more admired or honored than “The Swami.”  Recently, I got a chance to pick his brain on his past experiences and his thoughts on the current state of major league baseball.

Saving Terry Felton

by Brian Joseph

I wasn’t a normal kid growing up. I still remember leafing through my brother Bob’s worn copy of the first edition of The Baseball Encyclopedia looking up strange statistics, reading player’s nicknames and searching for players born in the city where I grew up. Although I can’t remember the first player I found in the book from Chester, Pennsylvania, I know there were a few.

The Disappearing Musicians

by Brendan Macgranachan

Wilbur Snapp was a ballpark organist and Lambert Bartak still is. Snapp and Bartak though, have both gone where no other ballpark organists have ever gone before. They have gone right out of the ballpark, becoming the only two organists to be ejected from a ballgame.

Mark Kotsay, “The Cycle,” and a Look at Rarities

by Brian Joseph

We’re no Elias Sports Bureau here at Seamheads but thanks to Baseball-Reference’s Play Index, this week, I decided to look at how rare hitting for the cycle is. On Thursday, Mark Kotsay became the 123rd player since 1956 to hit for the cycle and it was the 132nd time since 1956 someone has accomplished the feat.
