As we searched for the Gate 2 entrance to queue up for the monument tour, a lonely crackpot stood with a sign, “Repent Now, There Is Only One Way.” As we walked past he yelled at any and all, “Only God can save you.” One of the three young Yankee fans in front of us asked his mates, “Yeah, but can God get the Yankees in the playoffs.”

The Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres are all suffering through brutal seasons. The Nationals (50-85) and Mariners (50-83) still need 13 wins before the close of the ‘08 season to avoid 100 losses and the Padres are not far behind at 51-82. None of the league’s worst teams this season have winning percentages below .350 but since the beginning of professional baseball, at least one team per decade has delivered a winning percentage below that mark. My tribute to Eliot Asinof appeared in NOTES #350, not too long ago, and I do not need to reprint it here. I wasn’t a normal kid growing up. I still remember leafing through my brother Bob’s worn copy of the first edition of The Baseball Encyclopedia looking up strange statistics, reading player’s nicknames and searching for players born in the city where I grew up. Although I can’t remember the first player I found in the book from Chester, Pennsylvania, I know there were a few.

We’re no Elias Sports Bureau here at Seamheads but thanks to Baseball-Reference’s Play Index, this week, I decided to look at how rare hitting for the cycle is. On Thursday, Mark Kotsay became the 123rd player since 1956 to hit for the cycle and it was the 132nd time since 1956 someone has accomplished the feat.
