Miguel Cairo un pelotero sin igual (Miguel Cairo a player like no other)

English Translation

When the 93-94 season of professional baseball debut Venezuela saw a thin young man named Miguel Cairo could not even imagine what would be the career of the player.

The main feature of Cairo as a player was his immense desire to play, and his leg speed, indispensable weapon for a player in the infield.

That season did not see much action 93-94, but the following season was sensational, hitting for 319 poultry. and stealing 21 bases in addition to the lions. And eyes were on “Resume” as they say in Venezuela.

With Lions juice 3 seasons before being traded to the Cardinals Lara, a team which still belongs.

It was initially signed by the Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1990, played in its branches as a second baseman and shortstop from (1992 -1995) where he was subsequently sent instead to the Seattle Mariners with Mike Blowers Otañez Willis. It was with Toronto he had his first exhibition as a big league playing in 9 games under the mandate of this edition I quote Gastón.En other Venezuelans Sailor accompanied him as Tomas Perez (Barquisimeto), Robert Perez (Cuidad Bolivar), Tony Castillo (Quibor) and Giovanni Carrara (El Tigre).

In 1997 comes to Chicago Cubs (NL) seeing action in 16 games, but was later sent to Tampa Bay in the draft of expansion teams on November 18, 1997. With Tampa infielder had more playing time from 1998-2000 150-120-119 participating in games on.

Was released by the Tampa being signed as free agent by the Oakland Athletics on January 7, 2001, but the March 28 Athletics sent him to the Chicago Cubs for Eric Hinske. On August 10, 2001 the Cardinals take on the Venezuelan waiver of the Chicago Cubs from 2001 to 2003 Anaco boy involved with the Cardinals until he became a free agent in 2003 then being signed by the Yankees in New York. With the Yankees in Manhattan participated in 2004 and from there to New York Mets 2005, 2006-2007 New York Yankee, San Luis (2007) and currently (2008) plays with the Seattle Mariners.

Michael is currently serving his second season with the Reds, taking batting average averaging 290, working on what he does best: excellent utility infield and outfield. Cairo might be now one of the most complete in that role all the more.

John Fayman, Cincinnati Enquirer reporter, left casting a curious fact as true as a few days ago, speaking of Miguel Cairo.

Of all the players who took part in the inaugural roster of the then Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998, Venezuela is the only one still active.

Cairo was the second baseman who was born the year the franchise. That was the first of the four seasons he played every day in the majors, three in a row to Tampa and the last in 2004 with the Yankees in New York.

The native of Anaco already accumulated 16 seasons and nine teams in the majors. None of his countrymen has worn many uniforms in the big leagues.

But just look out of the race from Cairo to find other curiosities.

The anzoatiguense is the prototypical ‘utility’, the right hand of manager Dusty Baker.

Since coming to the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1996, has defended the four infield positions and the two corners of the gardens. Only awaiting patrol central receiver and launcher.

Cairo had to wait 15 seasons for his first multiyear contract. He signed it, another rarity, the 36-year-old in the past winter break. In May he turned 37 and, for now, has not disappointed.

Baker has been used in almost every place of the diamond, but you special consideration when veteran slugger Scott Rolen is indisposed. He even lined up as their cleanup hitter Cincinnati Reds in this harvest, when Rolen was out.

Cairo had only started one game as batting cleanup in his life. It was, according to Baseball Reference, in 2003, under the command of Tony La Russa, in St. Louis losCardenales.

It may be coincidence, maybe not. But the Venezuelan even batting .267/.318/.362 in his career, he grows when he hits fourth, whether the pair of shocks as a starter or in the other 29 which has been placed there in the middle of a game.

Their offensive line is .323/.417/.452 batting cleanup.

If his .868 OPS batting cleanup overall OPS was his service, only Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Abreu and Magglio Ordonez would have better stats than him, telling his countrymen.

Yes, Cairo would be over Andres Galarraga, Victor Martinez, Richard Hidalgo and Pablo Sandoval.

Recently there have been notable achievements for the issue out of the land of Luis Aparicio.

Freddy Garcia reached 23 wins in interleague play this Sunday and goes in search of the all-time record, held by Mark Buehrle, 24. The Mirandinos also recently became the first player with 140 wins South American in the majors.

Abreu reached and exceeded 2326 hits 2333 Dave Concepcion and Galarraga, to take possession of third place all time among his countrymen.

Omar Vizquel still adding games, hits and days of service to his brilliant and long career.

Cabrera reached 935 RBIs, the same as Mickey Mantle had 28 years of age.

Elvis Andrus broke exceeded 26 consecutive stolen bases achieved between 1956 and 1957 Aparicio.

Rafael Betancourt became the third pitcher born in Venezuela with at least 500 games in the big tent.

With so many brands of polish, Cairo can hardly compare his record of different shirts.

Or it can be otherwise and held that, among all his countrymen who remain active, only Vizquel has more years of service to him.

With 15 years of experience in the majors with nine teams participating, this globetrotting baseball has earned the respect of his countrymen and the world of baseball.

Miguel Cairo was born on May 4, 1974 in Anaco, Anzoategui State, Venezuela. The show debuted big with The Toronto Blue Jays on April 17, 1996. The same year he debuted in the majors Cairo also premiered Bobby Abreu, Edgar Renteria, Vladimir Guerrero, Livan Hernandez, Luis Castillo, Andruw Jones, Scott Rolen, Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Kendall.

So today has hit 994 lifetime average of 268, 132 stolen bases, 36 homers and 31 triples.

A long career in baseball to Cairo, who knew his shortcomings as a player has managed to bring consistency and professionalism in the service of all teams that participated.
