Willie Deserved Better – And So Did These Guys

by Brian Joseph

I never expected I would feel bad for Willie Randolph. How the Mets could screw up a slam dunk of a firing the way they did by canning a manager who just won his third of four games after flying coast-to-coast the day after meeting with the GM and asking to be fired IF he was going to be before making the trip is amazing, indeed. In honor of Willie Randolph’s 3:14am EDT firing on Tuesday is the All-“They Deserved Better” Team:

Can Griffey Avoid His Place In History — The Greatest Players To Never Play In The World Series

by Brian Joseph

In Florida tonight, Ken Griffey Jr. continues to chase 600 home runs.  Barring a disaster, Griffey will join the elite 600-HR club soon.  As Junior Griffey’s career crawls to a close, Griffey is running out of time to remove himself from his place in history as the greatest outfielder – possibly the greatest player – to never play in the World Series.

Performance Not Timing Should Be Lieberthal’s Legacy in Philadelphia

by Brian Joseph

On Sunday, former Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal will spend one more day as a Philadelphia Phillie then retire.  After spending 13 of his 14 seasons in Philadelphia and starting more games at catcher than any other Phillie (1,139), the Phillies plan to sign him to a ceremonial one-day contract, have him throw out the first ball and officially retire from baseball.

The Decline Of 20-Game Winners: A Lack Of Quality Not Quantity

by Brian Joseph

Last week, Padres’ Greg Maddux registered his 350th win.  There’s a good chance we won’t see that again in our lifetime.  While I still hold to my earlier posts that 300-game winners are not dead yet, there is serious cause for concern with the disappearance of consistent, high quality starting pitching.

When It Comes To Howard’s Slump, Everyone Has An Opinion (Including Me)

by Brian Joseph

On the heels of a night where he went 2-for-4 maybe there’s hope that Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is finally snapping out of his ’08 slump. Then again, he did add to his strikeout total twice to boost it to a major league-high 56 times.
