Collins was responding to reporters who accused him of deserting the Boston Nationals after signing a $4,000 contract to manage and play third base for the American League Red Sox prior to the 1901 season. The "Triumvirate" Collins referred to was composed of Nationals owners Arthur Soden, J.B. Billings and William Conant.
