Al Kaline, the Tigers Hall of Fame slugger and a former broadcast colleague of the gravely ill Harwell, will be in Manhattan to accept the Scully Award on Ernie’s behalf at WFUV’s Spring Gala.

“The players absolutely love him,” said Kaline. “When he was broadcasting and would come into the locker room before the game, the guys wouldn’t head to the training room. They were hoping that he was coming to talk to them!  Ernie was especially helpful to other aspiring broadcasters, whether in college or high school or just starting out. He was kind of like a ‘big brother’ to everyone.”

Harwell is the third recipient of the Scully Lifetime Achievement Award, with its namesake receiving the inaugural award in 2008, and Dick Enberg accepting last year. This year’s honorees also include CBS News’ Chief Washington Correspondent and Face the Nation anchor Bob Schieffer, who receives the Charles Osgood Lifetime Achievement Award, and music legend Levon Helm, who accepts the WFUV Sound and Vision Award.
