{"id":10579,"date":"2011-01-06T15:36:39","date_gmt":"2011-01-06T22:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/?p=10579"},"modified":"2011-01-06T15:36:39","modified_gmt":"2011-01-06T22:36:39","slug":"bill-buckner%e2%80%99s-hiring-draws-much-of-the-attention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/06\/bill-buckner%e2%80%99s-hiring-draws-much-of-the-attention\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Buckner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Hiring Draws Much of the Attention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The <strong>Can-Am League <\/strong>settled its expanded 2011 lineup today (Thursday), but I look at it in one manner as almost secondary to a hiring earlier this week that brings a sense of sentimental satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s because the <strong>Brockton (MA) Rox <\/strong>handed their managerial job to <strong>Bill Buckner<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Yes, that Bill Buckner, the one who wore, somewhat unfairly, the goat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s horns ever since <strong>Mookie Wilson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>wiggly ground ball got through the first baseman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s legs way back in the 1986 <strong>World Series<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 The <strong>New York Mets <\/strong>survived almost certain defeat on that play, and kept <strong>Boston <\/strong>from its first baseball world championship since the year after <strong>John F. Kennedy <\/strong>was born.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 For the record, the Can-Am League got back to eight teams for the first time in three years by finally putting a ribbon on the long-awaited franchise in <strong>Ramapo, NY <\/strong>and adding a road team to be known as the <strong>New York Federals.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>Ramapo joins <strong>Newark, NJ <\/strong>as new teams with a home stadium while <strong>Sussex (Augusta, NY) <\/strong>goes dark, largely because of an unsettled lease for <strong>Skylands Park.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>The Buckner hiring turned into a national story for Independent Baseball in this week largely set aside to welcome new <strong>Hall of Fame <\/strong>members.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Buckner, now 61, is not a Hall of Famer, but he was so vilified after that 10<sup>th<\/sup> inning problem in Game 6 when the <strong>Red Sox <\/strong>were within a single out of winning the World Series that <strong>New England <\/strong>media all but forgot this was a man who had driven in 102 runs for the \u00e2\u20ac\u212286 Sox and would finish a 22-year career in another four seasons with 2,715 hits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticleaguebaseball.com\/\">www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com<\/a> ADDED TO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indybaseballchatter.com\/\">www.IndyBaseballChatter.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>FOR ADDITIONAL INDEPENDENT BASEBALL COVERAGE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00c2\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">54 Teams Set to Play<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 With the <strong>Can-Am League <\/strong>set, the five primary Independent Leagues scheduled to operate in 2011 now total 54 teams, including two fulltime traveling clubs, although the new <strong>North American League <\/strong>says there is some chance it may still add two more.\u00c2\u00a0 This number will climb if the proposed <strong>Southwestern States <\/strong>and <strong>Pecos Leagues<\/strong> launch with the former discussing anywhere from four to eight teams and the Pecos at six.\u00c2\u00a0 There were 62 teams last season, but the four-team <strong>Continental League <\/strong>folded (some people did not accept it anyway because of its partial pay-to-play structure) and the <strong>Golden League<\/strong> territory, now making up one half of the NAL, dropped from 10 to six.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The lineup looks this way:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"258\" valign=\"top\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">League<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"55\" valign=\"top\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Teams<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"258\" valign=\"top\">Atlantic<\/td>\n<td width=\"55\" valign=\"top\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 #8<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"258\" valign=\"top\">American Association<\/td>\n<td width=\"55\" valign=\"top\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 14<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"258\" valign=\"top\">Can-Am<\/td>\n<td width=\"55\" valign=\"top\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 #8<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"258\" valign=\"top\">Frontier<\/td>\n<td width=\"55\" valign=\"top\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 12<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"258\" valign=\"top\">*North American<\/td>\n<td width=\"55\" valign=\"top\">\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 12<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0# Includes road-only team<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0*Teams previously in Golden, Northern and United Leagues<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00c2\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Non-Roster Invitations Rolling In<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 With the holidays in the rear view mirror, the pace of major league teams issuing spring training invitations has started picking up.\u00c2\u00a0 We know of 10 former Independent players with opportunities to shine in front of major league brass already, and the number could triple.\u00c2\u00a0 This is what we know at the moment, including their previous Indy teams and the leagues they were in at the time:<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 PITCHERS (7):\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Gabe DeHoyos, <\/strong>Oakland (Schaumburg, IL, Northern League);
