{"id":1076,"date":"2009-03-23T06:00:15","date_gmt":"2009-03-23T13:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/23\/sabr-giving-away-the-emerald-guide-to-baseball-2009-for-free\/"},"modified":"2009-03-23T06:00:18","modified_gmt":"2009-03-23T13:00:18","slug":"sabr-giving-away-the-emerald-guide-to-baseball-2009-for-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/23\/sabr-giving-away-the-emerald-guide-to-baseball-2009-for-free\/","title":{"rendered":"SABR Giving Away &#8220;The Emerald Guide to Baseball 2009&#8221; For Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) has made <em>The Emerald Guide to Baseball 2009<\/em> available for download at its web site.\u00c2\u00a0 The <em>Guide<\/em> is packed with 586 pages of baseball goodness and it&#8217;s FREE!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully the good folks at SABR decided to pick up the torch dropped by <em>The Sporting News<\/em> when <em>TSN<\/em> decided to discontinue its <em>Baseball Guide<\/em> series after 2006.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>The Emerald Guide<\/em> is loaded with information including front office personnel, minor league affiliates, spring rosters, broadcasting teams, 2009 schedules, and leaderboards for every major league team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"captionleft5\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/emerald.jpg\" alt=\"emerald.jpg\" class=\"img.alignleft\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you get past the extensive information contained in the <em>Guide&#8217;s<\/em> first 65 pages, you&#8217;ll be treated to a fascinating review of the 2008 season by acclaimed baseball historian Gary Gillette, who is also one of the <em>Guide&#8217;s<\/em> editors, and Doug White.<\/p>\n<p>Following the essay are pages jammed with standings, batting, pitching, and fielding statistics for every major league player, league leaders, and award winners.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to give anything away because part of the joy of exploring the <em>Emerald Guide<\/em> comes in finding unexpected nuggets of information.\u00c2\u00a0 And I don&#8217;t want to overuse the word &#8220;extensive,&#8221; but it&#8217;s just that.<\/p>\n<p>One spoiler I will divulge is that the award lists include &#8220;Ex Post Facto&#8221; recipients, and it&#8217;s fun to see Babe Ruth listed as the 1916 A.L.
