{"id":1166,"date":"2009-04-26T19:22:49","date_gmt":"2009-04-27T02:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/26\/chenoweth-and-ball-state-quartet-ready-to-lead-webster\/"},"modified":"2009-04-26T19:22:49","modified_gmt":"2009-04-27T02:22:49","slug":"chenoweth-and-ball-state-quartet-ready-to-lead-webster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/26\/chenoweth-and-ball-state-quartet-ready-to-lead-webster\/","title":{"rendered":"Chenoweth and Ball State Quartet Ready To Lead Webster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Webster residents should prepare themselves for some summer fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>No the town board has not approved additional pyrotechnic displays.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather, Coach Dave Brust\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Webster Yankees should provide plenty of firepower when the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nycbl.com\/\">New York Collegiate Baseball<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0season opens on Tuesday, June 9<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ryan Chenoweth and Scott Brothers lead a foursome from the Ball State Cardinals that have three wins over the Big Ten without dropping a game to the major conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re thinking of getting shirts that say Big Ten Champions,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d joked Ball State assistant, Mike Stafford after the Cardinals stunned 23<sup>rd<\/sup> ranked Ohio State, 20-8.<\/p>\n<p>Both Chenoweth and Brothers factored prominently in the road win for the Cardinals.\u00c2\u00a0 Chenoweth lashed a pair of doubles driving in two runs while Brothers tossed a scoreless inning.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Scott throws 87-90 miles per hour with a breaking ball,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d added Stafford.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He pitched a year in junior college at Gulf Coast, but he required Tommy John surgery.\u00c2\u00a0 He came and rehabbed for a season with us before getting back on the mound this year.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Brothers has thrown thirteen and a third with eight strike outs and a record one and one.<\/p>\n<p>Chenoweth will be making his second tour duty with the home nine.\u00c2\u00a0 Last season a foul tip at the plate caused a severe bone bruise and cut Chenoweth\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s summer season after just eight games.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That injury was weird,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said the junior outfielder when referring to the fact that his skin never discolored.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t until the beginning of fall sessions that my leg actually loosened up.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Ryan is a great defensive player,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Stafford.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got a great arm.<\/p>\n<p>Currently Chenoweth has 77 put outs with two assists from the outfield.\u00c2\u00a0 He finished last week with a home run as Cardinals topped Western Michigan 11-7.<\/p>\n<p>Chenoweth is looking forward to another summer in the Empire State.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It was fun out there.\u00c2\u00a0 Last year was the first time I had been in New York.\u00c2\u00a0 I liked it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>When speaking of the NYCBL Chenoweth added: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It has a bunch of nice fields with good crowds.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Two summers ago Chenoweth played for the Grand Lake Mariners of the Great Lakes Summer League.<\/p>\n<p>Nate Koontz and Dominic Catanzarite will accompany Chenoweth and Brothers.<\/p>\n<p>Koontz has a home run and seven RBI in his 18 appearances.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Nate has great power,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d added Stafford.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re excited about his future.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Catanzarite broke his leg during the fall season and took a medical red shirt for the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153He would have been on our roster had it not been for the injury,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Stafford.<\/p>\n<p>Currently the Cardinals hold second place in the Mid-American Conference\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s West Division.\u00c2\u00a0 Ball State is 7-8 in conference play and 18-18 overall.<\/p>\n<p>While in college Brust batted .290 with twenty-three round trippers and seventy-three runs batted in for the Cardinals.\u00c2\u00a0 Brust earned first-team All-Conference honors his second year when he batted .342, with fourteen homers.<\/p>\n<p>Webster opens the 2009 NYCBL season at Webster Town Park on June 9th when 2007 league champion, Elmira Pioneers, come to town.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New York Collegiate Baseball League, founded in 1978, is a summer wood bat development league for professional baseball.\u00c2\u00a0 Major League Baseball funds a small portion of the league\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s annual budget. The league gives college players who have not yet signed a professional contract the opportunity to develop their skills at a higher level of play, gain experience with wood bats, and be evaluated by scouts.\u00c2\u00a0 Current major leaguers Brad Lidge, Tim Hudson, John McDonald, and Dallas Braden all spent time in the NYCBL.<\/p>\n<p>Former Webster Yankees, Bryan Gardner and Pat Urckfitz currently play in the minor leagues.\u00c2\u00a0 Gardner pitches in the Cincinnati Reds system while Urckfitz comes out of the bullpen in the Houston Astros system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickinsplinters.com\/\">Pickin&#8217; Splinters<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Webster residents should prepare themselves for some summer fireworks.
