Amarillo Adds to American Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>American Association <\/strong>has expanded from 10 to 14 teams this offseason so it&#8217;s only natural that a giant share of the attention has been on the four franchises moving from the long-established <strong>Northern League. <\/strong>Still, some of the greatest excitement is being generated in <strong>Amarillo, TX<\/strong>, which also is new to this mushrooming league.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/indylogo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2992\" title=\"indylogo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/indylogo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a>Amarillo, a market of about 175,000 in northwestern Texas, has a long history in professional baseball and has been a regular almost continually in the Independent leagues since Year 2 of the resurgence back in 1994.\u00c2\u00a0 But the newly-named <strong>Sox<\/strong> will have the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s highest profile, at least since the <strong>Texas League <\/strong>days ended (1982).\u00c2\u00a0 The struggles to maintain any stable league affiliation have been such in recent times that General Manager <strong>Mark Lee<\/strong> sighed recently \u00e2\u20ac\u0153it seemed like every winter there was uncertainty\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, once the season started the fans turned out, last season\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s count was 139,790, an average of 2,912, which easily led the <strong>United League <\/strong>and was well into the top half of all Independent teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The town is excited\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, said Lee, the onetime major league pitcher, who spent a couple of decades in the insurance world before taking on the GM duties in 2006.\u00c2\u00a0 After this year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s squabbles for residency between the United League and new owner <strong>Scott Berry<\/strong>, Lee and Assistant General Manager <strong>Ben Miller <\/strong>were able to get the business office running by December 1 (two months earlier than the previous season), and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve actually caught up\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Lee said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This jump to the American Association is a big jump,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Lee offered.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think the caliber of baseball will be much better.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Kirk and Company Could Unseat Affiliated Team in Frederick, MD<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Peter Kirk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>effort to jump-start a <strong>Southwestern Division <\/strong>for the <strong>Atlantic League<\/strong> still is a one-city venture <strong>(Sugar Land, TX)<\/strong> as far as we know, the successful multi-team owner and real estate lawyer <strong>Jack Lavoie<\/strong> are digging into a highly intriguing situation in <strong>Frederick, MD.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>It appears Frederick Mayor <strong>Randy McClement<\/strong> is within a month and a half of opening the door via a request for proposal which could allow Kirk and Lavoie to put in a long-term community-favorable bid to place an Atlantic League team where <strong>Baltimore <\/strong>has had an affiliated <strong>Carolina League<\/strong> franchise since 1989.\u00c2\u00a0 An Independent league trying for a foothold where Major League Baseball has a farm club?\u00c2\u00a0 Very interesting!<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Frederick Keys, <\/strong>who are up for sale, have been working with one-year leases that are on the inexpensive side, and the current lease only runs for six months.\u00c2\u00a0 Lavoie is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153really intrigued with the Atlantic League model\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, and says he and Kirk have already had meetings with community, civic and business leaders in their hopes to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153re-build\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a strong community-oriented organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Indy Hurlers Start Strong in Caribbean Series<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Caribbean Series<\/strong>, often a pre-spring training showcase for players, started off Wednesday with <strong>Mexico <\/strong>outlasting the <strong>Dominican Republic <\/strong>4-3 in 15 innings, after starting as a mound duel between two top-notch southpaw graduates of the Independent leagues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Raul Valdes <\/strong>and <strong>Alberto Castillo <\/strong>allowed only one earned run in a combined 12 innings.\u00c2\u00a0 Valdes<strong>, <\/strong>the <strong>Cuban <\/strong>escapee who went on to pitch in the <strong>Can-Am League (New Jersey Jackals <\/strong>and <strong>Nashua, NH)<\/strong> and is due in the <strong>St. Louis Cardinals <\/strong>camp as a non-roster invitee in two weeks, gave up just three hits and one earned run (two overall) in 6.1 innings for the Dominican team.\u00c2\u00a0 Castillo, recently re-signed by <strong>Baltimore <\/strong>and likely headed to the Birds\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 major league camp although they have not announced their full non-roster contingent, was not charged with any earned runs (three runs total) in the first 5.2 innings for Mexico.\u00c2\u00a0 Castillo has spent time with three <strong>Atlantic League <\/strong>teams <strong>(Newark <\/strong>and <strong>Camden, NJ <\/strong>and the traveling <strong>Road Warriors) <\/strong>as well as <strong>Schaumburg, IL <\/strong>when it was in the <strong>Northern League.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Seth Etherton<\/strong>, who once toiled for <strong>Long Beach, CA <\/strong>in the <strong>Golden League <\/strong>and played in the <strong>Los Angeles Dodgers <\/strong>system last season but is believed to be a free agent, was the winner in the other first-day game, allowing just three hits and two runs in six innings as <strong>Venezuela <\/strong>bested <strong>Puerto Rico, <\/strong>5-3.<\/p>\n<p><em>(This is
