{"id":12533,"date":"2011-03-07T14:41:03","date_gmt":"2011-03-07T21:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/?p=12533"},"modified":"2011-03-10T21:53:21","modified_gmt":"2011-03-11T04:53:21","slug":"starting-pitchers-judging-their-careers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/07\/starting-pitchers-judging-their-careers\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting Pitchers: Judging Their Careers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How do you judge whether a starting pitcher had a Hall of Fame career?\u00c2\u00a0 Obviously, there are many fans who will have different opinions on this question.\u00c2\u00a0 And many of the answers may be influenced by which team the fan supports.\u00c2\u00a0<strong> But is there a completely objective way to answer this question?<\/strong> Yes, according to the CAWS Career Gauge, there is.\u00c2\u00a0 At least we can identify those pitchers who had <strong>obvious HOF numbers<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 And it appears that this method is quite accurate as to who actually gets elected.<\/p>\n<p>Bill James\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Win Shares system is the most comprehensive tool available to understand <strong>how good a season<\/strong> a player had.\u00c2\u00a0 It includes offensive and defensive contributions and adjusts for all relevant factors.\u00c2\u00a0 The CAWS Career Gauge (Career Assessment\/Win Shares) uses win shares to measure <strong>how good a career<\/strong> a player had.<\/p>\n<p>Starting pitchers who have obvious Hall of Fame numbers fall into one or more of these three categories:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A CAWS score &gt; 235.<br \/>\n2.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 300 career win shares.<br \/>\n3.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A CAWS score of 180 with fewer than 2400 innings pitched.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The PI Era (post-integration)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s take a look at each category and examine those pitchers who qualify during the PI (post integration) era.\u00c2\u00a0 I will define the PI Era to be 1947-2010.\u00c2\u00a0 Who are the starting pitchers who posted obvious HOF numbers during their careers during this era?\u00c2\u00a0 According to the CAWS Gauge, <strong>only twenty-two (22) starting pitchers <\/strong>posted HOF numbers during the PI era: sixteen (16) had a CAWS score of 235 or greater, three (3) others did not make this benchmark but did have 300 or more career win shares and three (3) others compiled a CAWS score of 180 in fewer than 2400 innings.\u00c2\u00a0 Here are the twenty-two (22) starting pitchers who have posted obvious HOF numbers during this era.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CAWS &gt;
