\"\"\"Roy<\/a>I was given a copy of MLB2K11 (Xbox 360) to use as a prize for our readers and podcast listeners and I’ve decided that rather than hold a blind drawing in which I reach into a hat and pull out a name I’m going to make you work for it. If you’re not familiar with Paul “Sully” Sullivan and his fantastic video shorts, check out the video below. Not only is it humorous and well done, but it fits our contest perfectly.<\/p>\n

In the video below, Sully laments the “horrible handles” given to today’s ballplayers and I couldn’t agree with him more. Today’s sobriquets STINK with a capital STINK. Gone are the days when ballplayers had nicknames like “The Apollo of the Box” (Tony Mullane), “Death to Flying Things” (Bob Ferguson) and “The Duke of Tralee” (Roger Bresnahan). Instead, as Sully mentions below, we have “A-Rod,” “I-Rod” and “J-Roll.” Not the least bit clever and boring as hell, if you ask me.<\/p>\n

So here’s the deal: whomever comes up with the best nickname for an active major league player gets the game. The runner-up will receive a copy of The SABR Baseball List & Record Book. <\/em><\/p>\n

I want the nickname to be creative, clever, colorful and say something about the player. And it doesn’t matter if he already has a nickname; if you can come up with something better, by all means submit it. You can submit as many nicknames as you want for as many players as you want. The contest will run from April 19 to May 20 and the winners will be announced on Memorial Day (May 30).<\/p>\n

Please help us put a stop to these terrible nicknames and you’ll be handsomely rewarded!<\/p>\n
