Alfonso L. Tusa C.

English translation

That start of 1969 had been very dynamic for the venezuelan baseball. The Magallanes Navigators had qualified for the four-team final series, but that was all. Once the season finished there were more movements. The Magallanes team was sold to a group of people from Valencia. As the days passed by I asked my brothers who would be the Magallanes Navigators’ skipper. They told me Carlos Patato Pascual. “The same guy that managed the Aragua Tigers the last season”, Felipe said with some hope. Jesús Mario kept his regular skepticism. “I hope that he doesn’t wait so long to take out the pitchers as Napoleón Reyes did.”

Pacual was born on March 13th, 1931 in Havana, Cuba. He played in MLB for the Washington Senators in 1950. He had a 1-1 record. 2.12 ERA. 17 innings.

From the beginning of the 1969-70 season of the venezuelan winter league, it was noticed Patato’s positive attitude and willingness. He always talked with all his players. And had a great criteria to change the pitchers and also for using his bench players.

Many people say that the origin of this anecdote belongs to Alfonso Chico Carrasquel and Tony Armas Sr. With all my respect for Chico Carrasquel and Armas, the first time I heard it was when some journalists asked Patato Pascual after a game why didn’t he order the bunt with Cito Gaston. Patato answered: “If you want to see Gaston bunting you’re going to have to buy him a drum.”

Patato Pascual died this Thursday, May 12th, 2011 in Miami, Fla. After a long disease that got worse with a pneumonia.

I remember a lot a game in November 1969. Magallanes faced the Caracas Lions. There was a play at home plate after Magallanes took the lead 2-1. The umpire called Gustavo Gil out in a very close action. Patato complained with a lot of energy and got expulsed along with his coach Leopoldo Tovar. That was one of the ways he motivated his players to give their best effort.

When Gaston took his at-bats, most of all at the end of the game, Patato shouted from the dugout: “Come on Cito give them under the rib cage. It’s time for they to respect us”.

Patato always performed as third base coach in that 1969.70 season. In the first game of the semifinal play off the Aragua Tigers routed Magallanes. When the journalists arrived to the Magallanes dugout, the first comment of Patato was: “The play off is just beginning. You’ll see tomorrow night how Magallanes is more alive than never”. In the second game Magallanes defeated the Tigers. For the third contest Magallanes was losing 3-0 in the fifth frame. With runners at first and third base Patato brought Gonzalo Marquez to pinch-hit for pitcher Danny Morris. Marquez hit a single to left field to put the score 3-2. The game arrived 3-3 to the 14th inning when Gregorio Machado, who had relieved for 10 innings, got to first base and Gustavo Gil hit a triple to deep left centerfield. Patato shaked his arms like a fan in third base and ran along with Machado to home plate.

After beating the Tigers in the semifinal series Patato told the media: “It would be wrong to select this or that player. Everybody hustled and gave all of their effort. Of course Jim Holt was the inspiration because of his bat, but also Gustavo Gil, Ray Fosse, Dámaso Blanco, Jesús Aristimuño, Chico Ruiz, Orlando Peña, Machado, Gregory Sims and the ones who left, Dick Baney y Gaston. Not to forget about Concepción Escalona and Victor Colina”. That was about the regular season. In reference to the semifinal series he said “The team was magnificent. Machado was the hero for his great job. But Holt hit a lot of line drives in the clutch and the other players did it very well. For example, Cesar Tovar didn’t hit well. But he made a great job in the field. He was the team’s inspiration because of his enthusiasm. Marquez also helped us”.

After getting the 1970 Caribbean Series championship, Patato said for the Sport Grafico magazine: “Our harmony has been very useful. Maybe it was the main strength in the competition. I think we have a good team and we found the winning road just when we needed”.

Patato managed the Magallanes team in the 1969-70, 70-71, 71-72 and 72-73 seasons. He achieved 1 league championship. 1 Caribbean Series title. 1 sub-championship. The last two times he battled until the end in two play off games to decide the last couple of qualified teams. His lifetime record with the Magallanes Navigators was 126-126.

Rest in peace Carlos Patato Pascual a great manager.

Alfonso L.
