Munson pasó a tercera. Alou pasó a segunda. Bob Montgomery reemplazó a Fisk.

English Translation

It’s for sure there were other great catchers as Johnny Bench and Ted Simmons. But each time Thurman Munson and Carlton Fisk wore the catcher’s stuff and got bent down behind the batter, it was guaranteed an intense competitiveness through the last strike of every game. That’s why every contest between the Yankees and the Red Sox in the 1970’s had an additional ingredient that increased the passion of the rivalry.

Each foul ball captured by Fisk in the stands was replied by Munson with very quick and accurate throw to retire runners attempting to steal a base. If Munson was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1970, Fisk got that award in 1972. If Fisk hit the dramatic home run in the sixth game of the 1975 World Series, Munson was the American League Most Valuable Player in 1976. If Fisk was leader in putouts in 1972 (846) and 1973 (739), Munson led the league in assists in 1970 (80), 1973 (80) and 1974 (75). If Munson got the best of Jim Catfish Hunter in his shaky starts, Fisk did the same with Bill Lee.

Maybe the most graphic sample of the intensity these players developed on the field was carved in baseball history the afternoon of the August 01st, 1973 at Fenway Park. The game arrived tied 2-2 at the ninth inning. Munson led off the frame with a double to left field against John Curtis. Graig Nettles grounded out from second to first. Munson to third. Felipe Alou was walked intentionally. Munson was out at home in an aborted squeeze play by Gene Michael. Munson crashed against Fisk but he never left the ball came out from the mitt. They pushed each other and resulted ejected from the game by the chief umpire. Alou to second. Bob Montgomery replaced Fisk. Michael grounded out from second to first. Boston won the game in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single by Mario Guerrero.

Fisk was the best American League catcher in 1977 and went to the All Star Game in 1977 and 1978, Munson replied winning the 1977 and 1978 World Series. In the one game play off during the 1978 season, Munson plated in one of the runs to help the Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-4, Fisk played with an injured rib since August and kept playing no matter of that.

In 2000 Fisk got inducted to the Cooperstown Hall of Fame, Munson probably would be there if he hadn’t passed away on August, 02 1979 when he still had at least 5 more seasons in MLB. In spite of this Munson also replied to that through a book published recently by Marty Appel about the unknown human side of the catcher: Munson: The Life and Times of a Yankee Captain. “I read over the book four times before I was ready to let it go,” Appel said. “And there were certain parts where, every time, my eyes welled up in tears. On the one hand, it seems like forever ago. On the other hand, it can feel like yesterday. His death stuck.”

[9

post-1422","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-general
["GET
