Injury Costs Job in Washington Nationals Chain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Ryan Quigley <\/strong>of the <strong>Joliet (IL) Slammers <\/strong>is enjoying what could easily be consider a dream season in the <strong>Frontier League<\/strong>, except that for most practical purposes the 25-year-old closer with only Independent Baseball experience on his professional resume could easily be getting batters out in the <strong>Washington Nationals\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/strong>minor league system.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The right-hander had six saves, a 1.08 earned run average and was averaging well over a strikeout per inning when the Nationals purchased his contract and assigned him to <strong>Auburn, NY.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>Quigley passed his <strong>New York-Penn League <\/strong>physical with no problem.\u00c2\u00a0 But when the information was sent along to the major league team doctor he gave a resounding \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcno\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, concerned for the future about \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the arthritis in my knees was too bad\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, the pitcher told <em>The Chicago Sun-Times.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I had both knees scoped that summer (2003),\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Quigley said, prior to starting his collegiate career at <strong>Chicago\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/strong> <strong>St. Xavier University.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153There were no ligament problems, just some cartilage.\u00c2\u00a0 I have had no problems with the knees, nothing that caused me to miss a start, miss a game or miss a practice since then.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I hope other teams know I am back here (Joliet) and I get a shot with someone else.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 One can only imagine it will happen since Quigley has added five more save since his return June 17 to give him a share of the league lead (11) along with 19 major leagues, including first-timer <strong>Jose Yepez,<\/strong> who played at <strong>Pensacola, FL, <\/strong>in the<strong> American Association,<\/strong> and <strong>Gary, IN<\/strong>, now in the same league but part of the <strong>Northern League <\/strong>when the new <strong>Seattle<\/strong> catcher was with the <strong>Southshore RailCats <\/strong>in \u00e2\u20ac\u212205 and \u00e2\u20ac\u212207.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Raul Valdes (New Jersey Jackals <\/strong>and <strong>Nashua, NH,\u00c2\u00a0 Can-Am League) <\/strong>joined <strong>St. Louis <\/strong>and another left-handed reliever, <strong>Alberto Castillo\u00c2\u00a0 (Atlantic League <\/strong>stops with <strong>New Jersey <\/strong>franchises in <strong>Camden <\/strong>and <strong>Newark <\/strong>plus the traveling <strong>Road Warriors <\/strong>and<strong> Schaumburg, IL, Northern League) <\/strong>was called up by <strong>Arizona.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Castillo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s major league record improved to 3-0 for 64 lifetime appearances (62 with <strong>Baltimore)<\/strong> when another former Indy player, <strong>Wily Mo Pena<\/strong>, pinch hit for him Tuesday night and clubbed a two-run walk-off home run for a 6-4 <strong>D-Backs\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/strong>win against <strong>Cleveland.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>It is quite possible the third round-tripper in Pena\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nine games with Arizona helped the designated hitter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chances of staying in the <strong>National League <\/strong>when inter-league play ends because each of the home runs helped win a game, and it was his second consecutive successful pinch hit appearance. <strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>Pena is hitting .231 (6-for-26) with five RBI.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153He (Pena) was opening his front side too early\u00e2\u20ac\u009d when he reported to <strong>Bridgeport, CT<\/strong> last season, <strong>Bluefish <\/strong>Manager <strong>Willie Upshaw<\/strong> told us this week.\u00c2\u00a0 The longtime major league player and hitting guru\u00c2\u00a0 said Pena still had more work to accomplish when his contract was sold to <strong>San Diego <\/strong>in mid-season.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We were trying to take some muscle out of his swing.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 It must have helped because Pena already had 21 home runs at Triple-A <strong>Reno, NV <\/strong>when the Diamondbacks promoted him to the parent
