{"id":1502,"date":"2009-08-10T09:13:38","date_gmt":"2009-08-10T16:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/10\/using-the-brooms\/"},"modified":"2009-08-10T09:13:38","modified_gmt":"2009-08-10T16:13:38","slug":"using-the-brooms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/10\/using-the-brooms\/","title":{"rendered":"Using the Brooms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nice to see the Cardinals finally get a sweep, even if it was against a team they should have swept and even if they had a little trouble in doing it.\u00c2\u00a0 Let&#8217;s take a look at the highlights of this weekend&#8217;s series against Pittsburgh.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><u><a href=\"http:\/\/stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com\/news\/wrap.jsp?ymd=20090807&amp;content_id=6299870&amp;vkey=wrapup2005&amp;fext=.jsp&amp;team=away&amp;c_id=stl\">Friday<\/a> (6-4 win)<\/u><br \/>\nHero: <strong>Matt Holliday<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 An early two-run homer that you&#8217;d expect would have been enough for Chris Carpenter (but wasn&#8217;t), then singling and working his way around the bases to score the go-ahead run.<br \/>\nGoat: <strong>Chris Carpenter<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Hard to believe it&#8217;s possible, but Carp had the rare off game Friday.\u00c2\u00a0 And he still pitched eight innings and got the win.<br \/>\nNotes: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/sports\/stories.nsf\/cardinals\/story\/60A313FA4979D2A68625760C001921C1?OpenDocument\">Albert Pujols<\/a> showed his stripes when dealing with the injured fan&#8230;.Holliday, Mark DeRosa and Julio Lugo all had a hit in the game, though Lugo got picked off in the first on a terrible play.<\/p>\n<p><u><a href=\"http:\/\/stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com\/news\/wrap.jsp?ymd=20090808&amp;content_id=6317430&amp;vkey=wrapup2005&amp;fext=.jsp&amp;team=away&amp;c_id=stl\">Saturday<\/a> (5-3 win)<\/u><br \/>\nHero: <strong>Adam Wainwright<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t go as deep into the game as he has been, but still pitched a great one, allowing only one run in just shy of seven innings.<br \/>\nGoat: <strong>Jason Motte<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 When is it going to click for Motte?\u00c2\u00a0 He can have a good outing, but it&#8217;s pretty rare when he doesn&#8217;t give up at least one long ball.<br \/>\nNotes: Pujols came up with the bases loaded again and got to 100 RBI.<\/p>\n<p><u><a href=\"http:\/\/stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com\/news\/wrap.jsp?ymd=20090809&amp;content_id=6332452&amp;vkey=wrapup2005&amp;fext=.jsp&amp;team=away&amp;c_id=stl\">Sunday<\/a> (7-3 win)<\/u><br \/>\nHero: <strong>Skip Schumaker<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 His pinch-hit HR <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/sports\/stories.nsf\/cardinals\/story\/BCDBF379B51C14BA8625760E000770FF?OpenDocument\">gave the Cards the lead<\/a>, which they then tacked on to.<br \/>\nGoat: <strong>Colby Rasmus<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 One of the only players not to get a hit in the game.<br \/>\nNotes: Joel Pineiro struggled early, but kept the Cards in the game&#8230;.Kyle McClellan had a nice 1.2 innings to lock it down.<\/p>\n<p>Coupled with the Cubs struggling against the Rockies, the Cardinals go into their homestand up two games in the NL Central.\u00c2\u00a0 With the Reds and Padres on the docket this week (compared to the Cubs hosting Philadelphia and Pittsburgh), St. Louis has a chance to push that lead out a little further and give themselves some breathing room.<\/p>\n<p>Fans, though, aren&#8217;t sure that the team is giving it their all when Todd Wellemeyer is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/sports\/stories.nsf\/cardinals\/story\/D9E1DF643169413E8625760E0004E495?OpenDocument\">supposed to take the mound<\/a> on Tuesday.
