{"id":1508,"date":"2009-08-12T08:28:59","date_gmt":"2009-08-12T15:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/12\/missed-opportunities\/"},"modified":"2009-08-12T08:28:59","modified_gmt":"2009-08-12T15:28:59","slug":"missed-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/12\/missed-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"Missed Opportunities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Too bad Mitchell Boggs didn&#8217;t show up for the first inning.\u00c2\u00a0 Too bad Jose Oquendo doesn&#8217;t realize that <strong>Yadier Molina<\/strong> isn&#8217;t exactly Mr. Swift.\u00c2\u00a0 Too bad the big bats couldn&#8217;t come through in the ninth.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/sports\/stories.nsf\/cardinals\/story\/EAE8E8C00D8756388625761000144523?OpenDocument\">Plenty of opportunities<\/a> for the Cardinals to extend their lead in the Central, but none of them came to pass.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There were a lot of flawed Heroes <a href=\"http:\/\/stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com\/news\/boxscore.jsp?gid=2009_08_11_cinmlb_slnmlb_1\">in this game<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Albert Pujols hit #37, but couldn&#8217;t get a hit in the ninth to extend the scoring threat.\u00c2\u00a0 Matt Holliday had three hits, but struck out with a runner on and two outs in the ninth.\u00c2\u00a0 Molina had three hits, but was thrown out twice on the base paths.\u00c2\u00a0 Boggs only gave up one run in five innings, but that was after three in the first.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll slap the Goat tag on <strong>Jason Motte<\/strong>, since the run he gave up decided the game.\u00c2\u00a0 Motte is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/sports\/stories.nsf\/cardinals\/story\/A402B2A2B468DD7A86257610001A4451?OpenDocument\">working on some things<\/a>, but it&#8217;s possible that he should get some time in Memphis to figure them out.\u00c2\u00a0 While the Cardinals do have a cushion right now, those memories of 2006 and how quickly cushions can deflate are still strong.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d rather him spend some time in Memphis and get on track so as to be ready to pitch in October than miss out because he was experimenting in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>Pip had some great postgame notes at Fungoes.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/stl-sabr.bajink.com\/fungoes\/?p=1909\">Head over there<\/a> to catch up.<\/p>\n<p>Still, most of the Central, including the Cubs, lost last night, so the Cardinals continue to have their three game lead as one more game was marked off the schedule.\u00c2\u00a0 While it&#8217;s way too early to really keep track of it, the magic number is 47.\u00c2\u00a0 Every day is another chance to chip away at that.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/sports\/stories.nsf\/cardinals\/story\/8D029CE233A779CA86257610000EA2A4?OpenDocument\">Shaq was in the house<\/a> last night, throwing out the first pitch (and doing a tolerable job of it as well, even if AP was on the plate instead of behind it) and working up interest in his reality show.\u00c2\u00a0 It should be an interesting event on Thursday when the two of them go head to head in a hitting contest.\u00c2\u00a0 Can&#8217;t wait to see the episode!<\/p>\n<p>The Cards wrap up the series, which is the last one against Cincinnati in Busch, by sending Chris Carpenter to the mound against Homer Bailey.\u00c2\u00a0 Carp was human last time out, giving up four runs against the Pirates, but you have to figure he&#8217;ll be wanting to redeem himself from that outing.\u00c2\u00a0 Nobody currently on the Reds <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/play-index\/shareit\/4ytP\">has had much success<\/a> against him in the past, something that may continue this evening.<\/p>\n<p>St. Louis has had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/play-index\/shareit\/xhbW\">bit more success<\/a> against Bailey, with a few long balls sprinkled in there.\u00c2\u00a0 Nobody has faced him a lot, though his lack of success around the league this year doesn&#8217;t bode well for the Redlegs.<\/p>\n<p>Cubs take on the Phillies again tonight, so maybe the Cards can push that lead out a little farther.<\/p>\n<p><em>Daniel Shoptaw is the founder of &#8220;C70 At The Bat,&#8221;
