En infinitas ocasiones este tema ha sido motivo de discusi\u00c3\u00b3n y pol\u00c3\u00a9mica,porque es inagotable. Muchas veces nos olvidamos de los peloteros de otros pa\u00c3\u00adses latinos que han brillado en las paradas cortas.<\/p>\n

la Rep\u00c3\u00bablica Dominicana ha dado para las grandes ligas tambi\u00c3\u00a9n una cantidad importante de campocortos de envergadura. si bien es cierto que el grueso de sus importantes peloteros han destacado mas en otras posiciones,tambi\u00c3\u00a9n lo es que los contados shortstop han sido de tremenda factura y calidad.<\/p>\n

Tony Fernandez ha sido para este servidor uno de los mejores que he podido observar en un diamante de pelota. Fernandez fue un pelotero que se lucio con su gran defensa. En la d\u00c3\u00a9cada de los 80 sin duda fue uno de los mejores,tanto defensivamente como aportando con su bate.<\/p>\n

Bateaba desde ambos lados del plato, ten\u00c3\u00ada una gran velocidad, contaba con un guante excepcional y era extremadamente paciente en el plato. Fue uno de los mejores campocortos de su \u00c3\u00a9poca tanto a la ofensiva como en la defensa.<\/p>\n

Octavio Antonio Fern\u00c3\u00a1ndez Castro, mejor conocido como Tony Fern\u00c3\u00a1ndez, naci\u00c3\u00b3 el 30 de junio de 1962 en San Pedro de Macor\u00c3\u00ads. En 1974, cuando apenas ten\u00c3\u00ada 12 a\u00c3\u00b1os de edad, capt\u00c3\u00b3 poderosamente la atenci\u00c3\u00b3n del dirigente Tony LaRussa por su talento a tan corta edad. Sin embargo fue a trav\u00c3\u00a9s del escucha de los Azulejos Epy Guerrero que ingres\u00c3\u00b3 al b\u00c3\u00a9isbol organizado de los Estados Unidos, y fue firmado como agente libre.<\/p>\n

Fern\u00c3\u00a1ndez fue subido a las mayores en 1983 y ya para 1985 era el campocorto titular del equipo. Fue una pieza clave para que el equipo lograra ese a\u00c3\u00b1o su primer t\u00c3\u00adtulo de divisi\u00c3\u00b3n, y en los siguientes a\u00c3\u00b1os mantuvo su consistencia convirti\u00c3\u00a9ndose en una de las estrellas del equipo, promediando cerca de 600 turnos de manera consistente.<\/p>\n

En 1986 fue el l\u00c3\u00adder entre los campocortos de la Liga Americana en outs sacados y en porcentaje de fildeo, y se convirti\u00c3\u00b3 adem\u00c3\u00a1s en el primer jugador de los Azulejos que logra una temporada de 200 hits, estableciendo tambi\u00c3\u00a9n una marca de las mayores en ese momento como el campocorto con m\u00c3\u00a1s hits conectados en el Siglo XX, tras lograr 212 de sus 213 imparables jugando esa posici\u00c3\u00b3n.<\/p>\n

Antes de iniciar la campa\u00c3\u00b1a de 1991, Fern\u00c3\u00a1ndez fue cambiado a los Padres de San Diego.
