{"id":1561,"date":"2009-08-25T08:20:37","date_gmt":"2009-08-25T15:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/25\/off-day-miscellany\/"},"modified":"2009-08-25T08:20:37","modified_gmt":"2009-08-25T15:20:37","slug":"off-day-miscellany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/25\/off-day-miscellany\/","title":{"rendered":"Off Day Miscellany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No major moves.\u00c2\u00a0 No breaking stories.\u00c2\u00a0 Just a quiet, ho-hum off day.\u00c2\u00a0 Which means there&#8217;s not too much to write about.\u00c2\u00a0 So let&#8217;s just hit a few links before we take a look at the series that starts tonight vs. Houston.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Matthew Leach has <a href=\"http:\/\/stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com\/news\/article.jsp?ymd=20090824&amp;content_id=6597000&amp;vkey=news_stl&amp;fext=.jsp&amp;c_id=stl\">another of his mailbags up<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Possibly the most interesting point was that Jamie Garcia is now off rehab and is pitching for Memphis, but he likely won&#8217;t get much of a look in the bigs this year.\u00c2\u00a0 You&#8217;d think that they might want to see him in September, get him a few innings more of work, but I can understand the desire to not press their luck.<\/p>\n<p>Josh at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redbirdsrow.com\/articles-2009\/august\/seeing-september.html\">Redbirds Row<\/a> does a quick recap of where we stand now, then announces his move to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pitchershiteighth.com\/\">Pitchers Hit Eighth<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Which means tomorrow night&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogtalkradio.com\/UCB-Host\/2009\/08\/27\/United-Cardinal-Bloggers-Radio-Hour\">UCB Radio Hour<\/a> will be basically sponsored by PH8, since Josh and founder Nick will be hosting.<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal John <a href=\"http:\/\/stlouiscardinals.blogspot.com\/2009\/08\/all-on-their-dime.html\">has a little fun<\/a> with his Red Sox-loving cousin.\u00c2\u00a0 Like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labeisbolista.com\/\">La Beisbolista<\/a> said on her Facebook page, wouldn&#8217;t it be ironic if John Smoltz got the win and Julio Lugo a key hit in a 2004 Series rematch?\u00c2\u00a0 While Boston is paying both of those guys to beat them?<\/p>\n<p>While the Cardinals can be forgiven for looking to October, there&#8217;s still a month of baseball to be played.\u00c2\u00a0 Stranger things have happened, and the team <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/sports\/stories.nsf\/cardinals\/story\/881632F99FF5F52A8625761D0012E87E?OpenDocument\">isn&#8217;t getting ahead of itself<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 You would expect a TLR-managed team to stay focused and continue to pile up the wins.<\/p>\n<p>My monthly post is up today at <a href=\"http:\/\/baseballreflections.com\/2009\/08\/25\/the-cardinals-are-picking-up-steam\/\">Baseball Reflections<\/a>, if you want to check that out.\u00c2\u00a0 August was a very good month to write about!<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, the Cardinals have to take on one of their nemesises in Wandy Rodriguez, whom has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vivaelbirdos.com\/2009\/8\/25\/1001262\/breaking-the-wandy\">provoked some dislike<\/a> in quarters of Cardinal Nation. Rodriguez has moved onto the list of Cardinal killers, not in the least because he can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/play-index\/shareit\/BtdF\">shut down Albert Pujols<\/a> as well as just about anyone.\u00c2\u00a0 The Cardinals can beat him&#8211;he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/mlb\/players\/splits?playerId=6286\">1-1 in three starts<\/a> against them this year&#8211;but it won&#8217;t be a slugfest, as he&#8217;s only allowed a 2.65 ERA against the Birds in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you are going into a game that you don&#8217;t expect to score much in, it&#8217;s a good thing to be taking a Cy Young candidate into it with you.\u00c2\u00a0 If momentum means anything, Adam Wainwright has got it.\u00c2\u00a0 His combined ERA for the months of July and August?\u00c2\u00a0 1.34.
