{"id":157,"date":"2007-11-23T15:50:04","date_gmt":"2007-11-23T22:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/23\/win-shares-and-the-hall-of-fame\/"},"modified":"2007-11-23T15:50:04","modified_gmt":"2007-11-23T22:50:04","slug":"win-shares-and-the-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/23\/win-shares-and-the-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"WIN SHARES and the HALL OF FAME"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoBodyText\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">I<span>n 2002, Bill James published his book called <strong>WIN SHARES<\/strong> in which he introduced a new system that was the product of more than twenty-five years of research.<span>  <\/span>And it is this system that I am convinced is <strong>far better than any other that has been developed<\/strong> for comparing players.<span>  <\/span>The method is so revolutionary that I believe that it is fair to say that FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, we are able to validly look at and compare 20<sup>th<\/sup> century players (including hitting and fielding and pitching) no matter when they played or who they played for.<span>  <\/span><strong>The key to the value of Win Shares is that it tells us how valuable a player was <em>to his team<\/em> each season<\/strong>.<span>  <\/span>And, of course, a player\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s value to his team is what the game is all about.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoBodyText\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p>But if we want to use Win Shares in order to compare players\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 careers, then it is necessary to devise a way to do it other than to simply look at the total number of Win Shares accumulated.<span>  <\/span>That is why I have developed the NEWS Hall of Fame Gauge \u00e2\u20ac\u201c based on Win Shares.<span>  <\/span>Consider the following example.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Arky Vaughan and Brooks Robinson<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p>Arky Vaughan and Brooks Robinson were both outstanding infielders who are in the Hall of Fame.<span>  <\/span><st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Vaughan<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> is considered by many as one of the top three shortstops of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<span>  <\/span>And Robinson is generally regarded as the best fielding third baseman of all time.<span>  <\/span>The numbers that they accumulated during their careers illustrate rather well what the NEWS Gauge is designed to demonstrate.<span>  <\/span><strong>Both of these players accumulated 356 win shares<\/strong> during their careers.<span>  <\/span>But that does not mean that their careers were similar in any way.<span>  <\/span><st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Vaughan<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> played for fourteen seasons and Robinson for twenty-three.<span>  <\/span>Arky\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s core value (CV) was 308 meaning that he averaged almost 31 win shares for his ten best seasons \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a truly great performance.<span>  <\/span>Brooks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 CV was 247 indicating that he averaged almost 25 win shares for his ten best \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a very good career but not nearly as good as Vaughan.<span>  <\/span>Arky\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s NEWS score of 320 places him among the top 35 position players of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<span>  <\/span>Brooks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 score of 274 is respectable (and places him among the top 100 position players of the century) but it cannot compare to <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Vaughan<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 320.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p>For more information, check out the material in <strong>BASEBALL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122S BEST: The TRUE Hall of Famers<\/strong> on this site.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2002, Bill James published his book called WIN SHARES in which he introduced a new system that was the product of more than twenty-five years of research.
