\u201cI still check the <strong>Can-Am (League) <\/strong>box scores nearly every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">That might not seem so strange except that the onetime major league first baseman-outfielder is no longer managing in the Northeast-based league.\u00a0 He is finishing his first season back in affiliated baseball, leading the <strong>Washington Nationals <\/strong>farm club in <strong>Hagerstown<\/strong><strong>, MD<\/strong> where his attention has been on the development of future major leaguers, including the prized pitcher <strong>Stephen Strasburg<\/strong> and equally-regarded outfielder <strong>Bryce Harper.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/indylogo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2992\" title=\"indylogo\" src=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/indylogo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a>Daubach could be forgiven if Independent Baseball was in his rear-view mirror, but it seemed far from it as we chatted over the telephone.\u00a0 The 39-year-old manager, who drove in all but 24 of his 333 major league runs for the <strong>Boston Red Sox<\/strong>, still talks to <strong>Jamie Keefe, <\/strong>who replaced him in <strong>Pittsfield, MA <\/strong>this season, and other Can-Am and <strong>American Association <\/strong>managers with some regularity.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cI had a special group in <strong>Nashua<\/strong><strong> (NH <\/strong>in \u201908-09) and especially in Pittsfield\u201d, Daubach said, fondly referring to the \u201cteam mentality\u201d and overcoming certain \u201cobstacles\u201d with the franchise not overly endowed with strong financial support.\u00a0 He took the <strong>Colonials <\/strong>to the championship series, where they lost in four games to <strong>Quebec<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I had to ask how it had been to manage Harper, who played 72 games for Hagerstown before moving on to Class AA, and Strasburg, who has made three starts for the team in his season-long injury rehab.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cOh boy,\u201d Daubach sighed.\u00a0 \u201cIt has been an experience I\u2019ll never forget.\u00a0\u00a0 Both are very, very special.\u00a0 Stephen is a little more prepared.\u201d\u00a0 The manager pointed to the hurler\u2019s experience as a collegian at <strong>San Diego State <\/strong>under <strong>Hall of Fame <\/strong>outfielder <strong>Tony Gwynn.\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cBryce needs to get used to the everyday grind.\u00a0 They\u2019re both great kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p digging had only gotten started when we reported a couple of weeks back on the Indy game having a new career home run leader.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The top two long-ball artists were overlooked with retiree <strong>Glenn Murray <\/strong>in the No. 1 spot (163) when this year started and venerable <strong>Eddie Lantigua<\/strong>, who ended a one-year retirement by going to work for the <strong>Can-Am League\u2019s <\/strong>traveling <strong>New York Federals<\/strong> this season, now in charge.\u00a0 Lantigua, 37, has a dozen home runs for the Feds for a career mark of 174 with six different Independent teams.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The top ten (1993-2011), as best we can tell, with kudos to broadcasters <strong>Dave Collins <\/strong>of <strong>Lancaster, PA (Atlantic
