BBWAA Hall of Fame Ballot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The NEWS HOF Gauge (based on Win Shares) has set performance standards for players and pitchers in order to determine whether they have the numbers to be considered serious candidates for the Hall of Fame.<span>  <\/span>These are tough standards as is evidenced by the fact that only 93 position players and 49 pitchers (who played during the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century) have <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers according to the NEWS Gauge.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p>Five of these 142 players are on the 2008 BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot.<span>  <\/span>Three are pitchers and two are position players.<span>  <\/span>Here are the five players.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoHeading7\"><strong><u>The Pitchers<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span>1.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Bert Blyleven<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Only 35 starting pitchers in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century achieved a NEWS score of 235 (considered to be obvious <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers).<span>  <\/span>Bert Blyleven is one of those pitchers.<span>  <\/span>In fact, he is the #24 best starting pitcher of the century.<span>  <\/span>Every other pitcher ahead of him on the list is in the Hall of Fame with the exception of the three active pitchers: Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson.<span>  <\/span>Why he is not already in the Hall is a mystery.<span>  <\/span>He got 47.7% of the vote in 2007 so he has a shot this time.<o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span>2.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Goose Gossage<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Only five pitchers in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century achieved a NEWS score of 180 in fewer than 2400 innings pitched.<span>  <\/span>Four of them are already in the Hall: Addie Joss, Sandy Koufax, Dizzy Dean and Hoyt Wilhelm.<span>  <\/span>Goose Gossage is the fifth.<span>  <\/span>He has <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers and, hopefully, he will be elected this year since he got 71.2% of the vote in 2007.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span>3.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Lee Smith<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">According to the NEWS Gauge, only five \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pure relievers\u00e2\u20ac\u009d have <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers.<span>  <\/span>That is, they have a NEWS score of 150 with fewer than 1700 innings pitched.<span>  <\/span>Here are those five pitchers in order of ranking: Mariano Rivera, Lee Smith, Bruce Sutter, Dan Quisenberry and Rollie Fingers.<span>  <\/span>Sutter and Fingers are in the Hall and Rivera is still active.<span>  <\/span>Only Quisenberry has been completely passed over by the voters.<span>  <\/span>Lee Smith has <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers.<span>  <\/span>He got 39.8% of the vote in 2007.<span>  <\/span>Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hope that he will get a much higher percentage this time around.<span>   <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><o:p><\/o:p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Jack Morris got 37.1% of the vote in the 2007 election.<span>  <\/span>But Morris does not have <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c not even close.<span>  <\/span>His NEWS score is 185.<span>  <\/span>Here is a list of some other starting pitchers who do not have <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers but rank ahead of Morris.<span>  <\/span>(A NEWS score of 235 is considered to represent obvious <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers for a starting pitcher.)<span> either.<span>  <\/span>He got 22.8% of the vote in 2007 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c somewhat less than Jack Morris.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p>No other pitcher on the 2008 BBWAA ballot is anywhere close to Hall of Fame numbers.<span>  <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoHeading7\"><span><o:p><br \/>\n<\/o:p><strong><u>The Position Players<\/u><\/strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">There are two position players on the 2008 ballot who have Hall of Fame numbers.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span>1.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Tim Raines <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">This is the first year on the ballot for Tim Raines.<span>  <\/span>And it is probably fair to say that he is one of the least appreciated great players of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<span>  <\/span>The NEWS Gauge has him ranked as the #48 best position player of the century.<span>  <\/span>Look at the four players ranked just above him and just below him.<span>  <\/span>That is good company to keep.<span>  <\/span>(The number to the right is the NEWS score.<span>  <\/span>A score of 280 is considered obvious <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Mark McGwire<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">Mark McGwire is the only other position player on the 2008 ballot who has obvious <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers.<span>  <\/span>He has a NEWS score of 298 and is the #56 best position player of the century.<span>  <\/span>However, the steroids question evidently cost him last year when he got only 23.5% of the votes.<span>  <\/span>Will he do better this year?<span>  <\/span>Who knows?<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>What about the other position players on the 2008 ballot?<span>  <\/span>There are eight position players who got enough votes in 2007 to remain on the ballot.<span>  <\/span>Unfortunately, none of them has <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers according to the NEWS \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 11.4%, Don Mattingly \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 9.9%, Dale Murphy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 9.2% and Harold Baines \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 5.3%.<span>  <\/span>As you can see above, Dave Parker has the best career numbers of the group according to the NEWS Gauge.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p>Only Rice and Dawson appear to have any chance of being elected to the Hall at some point from this group.<span>  <\/span>If either is elected, it appears that one more player who does not have the numbers will be in the Hall of Fame.<span>  <\/span>Of course, there may be some other justification in the minds of the voters (besides the numbers) for one or the other of these players to be honored.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p>None of the other position players who are new to the ballot this year has <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers (besides Tim Raines above).<span>  <\/span>Chuck Knoblauch with a NEWS score of 222 is the highest of the group.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><o:p><\/o:p><span><\/span>In summary, only five of the twenty-five players on the 2008 BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot have true <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers according to the NEWS HOF Gauge: Bert Blyleven, Goose Gossage, Lee Smith, Tim
