Mis hermanos querían regresar a casa.

English translation

It’s inevitable to look in the schedule for the first contest between the Caracas Lions and the Magallanes Navigartors. It still buzzes in my ears my brothers emotional voices and their highschool notebooks flying over the beds. Felipe and Jesus Mario almost forgot about putting the secure device to their beloved bicycles and stumbled in the porch’s step. I had to run and adhere against the wall of wood and formica. I had never seen them running as uncontrolled trains. They didn’t even hear my greeting, nor took the rubber ball from me. Through the window, Jesus Mario scanned the pages of a magazine and Felipe dissected the sports headlines of El Nacional.

“Well brother, it came the day when Magallanes has to take revenge from so many humilliations from the Caracas Lions. With Bob Belinsky on the mound. With Cito Gaston burning the league with his batting. With Pat Kelly flying on the base paths. With Dámaso Blanco grabbing every ball at the hot corner and with Gus Gil hitting all those opportunistic shots, I think we can beat them tonight.”

For this Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th the confrontation temperature will come until the boiling point that will begin to raise from this Monday with the comments, the surging of jerseys, caps, songs, jokes that will appear on the street and every public place where the Lions and Navigators fans coincide. The jokes frozen by the offseason will recover their intensity with the heat of the real time games of the 2011-12 season. Everything will oscillate between the jungle’s roaring and the ship’s cannons.

The volatility of this rivalry flows even in the shadows of a street in Cumaná,Sucre; where a bunch ofCaracasfans joins at a corner and with each Magallanes fan passing by, the way gets illuminated. “We`re going to beat you tonight.” “That ship will collapse.” The Magallanes fans run to the next corner and connect some wires to a car battery. The most strident siren goes on. “Come here now, we’re going to burn your skin.”

Jesús Mario made the Sport Gráfico magazine’s pages sound like firecrackers. “And you forgot about what Armando Ortiz can do in left field and with his bat, and Walter Hriniak with his mitt or Joe Rudi, who can bat against the hardest pitcher.” I had never seen them talking with such intensity or reading with such hunger. They looked like great scientists. I knew just a little about baseball. I was more aware of “My favorite martian” or “I dream of Jeannie”. But anyway, that dynamics of competition made something boil inside my heart. This motivated me to follow each movement my brothers performed while waiting for the broadcast of the ballgame.

Which team will win the games in the weekend? How many championships has each team won? Which is the best team? All of it is firewood for the rivalry. Each minute in the fight it can appear valid or not so valid points that could lead to a sulfuric situation. Everything has an invisible limit that finishes with the victory of the day.

Then it comes the bottom of the ninth inning and theCaracasfans jump when they get the bases loades and no outs. They know they win with the runner on third base. One of the Magallanes fans tries to escape by walking seven blocks to avoid theCaracasfans corner if their team wins the game. When he’s half the way, he hears his friends’ shouts. “What happened? Weren’t you going to destroy our ship?” He ran under the smell of the guayabas leaves. The Magallanes reliever had completed the inning scoreless before the most dangerous hitters.

One of those nights I went out with Felipe and Jesús Mario. At Montes square there were some groups. The shouts went and came. My brothers wanted to return home. I escaped from them and strived inside the ice cream store of Mr. Luis Ramón Rincones. A baseball broadcast was the only thing you could hear there. Mr. Rincones said he hoped the Magallanes fans kept the smile when theCaracasteam began its particular slugfest. A modified voice came from below one of the tables. “And we hope that you won’t close the store if Magallanes beat the Lions”.

Alfonso L.
