The NEWS HOF Gauge recognizes two small groups of pitchers as having HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers even though they did not reach the NEWS criterion of 235 for a starting pitcher.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>The 180\/2400 Standard <\/span>– Starters and starter\/reliever<\/o:p><\/span><\/strong>
\n<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

There are only five pitchers<\/strong> in the 20th<\/sup> century who have attained a NEWS score of 180 while pitching in fewer than 2400 innings. <\/span>Three of these pitchers were starters and the other two are better known for their relief efforts. <\/span>According to the NEWS Gauge, all five have HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers. <\/span>Here they are:<\/span><\/p>\n

Four of these pitchers are already in the Hall of Fame. <\/span>Only Goose Gossage awaits induction into the Hall. <\/span>Hopefully, that will happen soon. <\/span>(I should mention that Dennis Eckersley has HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> number by virtue of his 300 career win shares.)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

2. <\/span>The 150\/1700 standard \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The true relievers<\/o:p><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are only five pitchers<\/strong> in the 20th<\/sup> century who have attained a NEWS score of 150 while pitching in fewer than 1700 innings. <\/span>These are the true relievers who have definite HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers. <\/span>Here they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Rollie Fingers just makes it since he actually pitched in 1701 innings. <\/span>Only Bruce Sutter and Fingers are in the Hall of Fame. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p>This would seem to imply that Mariano Rivera is the best true reliever of the century. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/o:p>You will note that Trevor Hoffman (the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153saves\u00e2\u20ac\u009d leader) is not on this list. <\/span>His NEWS score is 142.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
