Luego de más de cinco meses recibí un libro de béisbol que Mike Lynch me había enviado a fin de analizarlo para la web page Seamheads.com. Es una novela escrita por Darryl Brock sobre el pitcher sordo Luther Taylor de los Gigantes de Nueva York.<\/p>\n
La historia se ubica a medio camino entre la ficción y la realidad. La escritura emerge del corazón apoyada en un conocimiento que bucea en las profundidades más remotas del juego. Cada seña emitida por el personaje principal, despliega un ambiente especial que dibuja los diamantes de béisbol y la intimidad de la vida privada de Taylor en trazos de alta dimensión narrativa<\/p>\n
Los Gigantes de John McGraw de comienzos del siglo XX, contaban entre sus lanzadores a Taylor, mas una lesión en su brazo de lanzar lo llevó al retiro.<\/p>\n
La narrativa de Brock dibuja un ambiente de béisbol tan profundo que cada página deja pezrrubia en las manos y cada línea resuena sobre la grama de los jardines con emociones atrapadas en la más legítima de las expresiones del juego, una competitividad que destila a través de las ganas de regresar al juego de Taylor, quién siente que su brazo ha recuperado la fuerza. Son impresionantes las pinturas de las manifestaciones cubanas por el juego. Los aficionados llaman a John McGraw el “mono amarillo” en recuerdo del color del uniforme que usaba cuando años atrás fue a jugar una serie en la isla. También sorprenden a Taylor cuando le gritan “¡el sordo!” y éste disfruta la efusividad luego de consultar su diccionario bilingüe. Brock recorre las calles y el malecón deLa Habanacon detalles de alguien que siente la ciudad en el alma.<\/p>\n
Brock sorprende con todas esas tonalidades encarnadas de su pincel en las particularidades de aquel béisbol de otros tiempos. Al referir como McGraw recogió dinero de sus peloteros para apostarlo y motivar a sus jugadores, me hizo recordar cuando jugábamos las caimaneras en el solar de asfalto frente a la casa y los muchachos decían: “vamos a jugar a los refrescos”. Entonces se veían las jugadas más escalofriantes. Una vez uno de los muchachos corrió hasta la calle y casi se lo lleva un carro. En la novela, Taylor desde el cajón de coach empieza a gritar “Mamá” al pitcher de los Rojos deLa Habanahasta que lo saca de concentración y allí aprovecharon los Gigantes para marcar una rayita. La manera como el escritor mezcla los pormenores del juego con las intimidades de los peloteros crea una atmósfera de tensión que sólo termina en la última página del libro.<\/p>\n
En paralelo ocurre una historia apasionante que arrastra el tono emotivo de la novela hasta transmutarlo en suspenso. Brock maneja muy bien los conocimientos de cultura cubana, esto le permite llenar de imagenes expresivas el transcurso de los episodios.<\/p>\n

After more than five months I received a baseball book that Mike Lynch had sent me to analyze it for the web page Seamheads.com. It’s a novel written by Darryl Brock about the New York Giants’ deaf pitcher Luther Taylor.<\/p>\n
The story is somewhere between fiction and reality. The writing comes from the heart supported by a knowledge that explores the most remote corners of the game. Each sign from the main character displays an especial landscape that paints the baseball diamonds and the private life ofTaylorin great narrative traces.<\/p>\n
The John McGraw’s Giants at the beginning of the 20th<\/sup> century, counted withTaylor among his pitchers, but an injury in his throwing arm made him retire from baseball.<\/p>\n Brock’s narrative pictures a baseball scenery so deep that each page leaves rosing bag powder in the fingers and each written line resounds in the outfield grass with trapped emotions in the most intense baseball’s expressions, a competitiveness painted in how much Taylor wants to be back as a pitcher. Because he feels his throwing arm recovered the strength. The paintings about the cuban demonstrations for the game are impressive. The fans call John McGraw the “yellow monkey” because of the uniform’s color he worn some years before when he first went to play a series in the island. The fans also keepTaylor’s attention when they shout “the deaf pitcher!”. He enjoys this efusivity after looking at his bilingual dictionary. Brock visitsHavana’s streets and the malecon with details only a guy who feels the city in his soul can know.<\/p>\n Brock amazes with all those colorful tones in his writing about baseball from the past. When he relates how McGraw collected money from his players to bet and motivate the team to win, it made me recall when we played sandlot games at the asphalt lot in front of my parents’ home, the guys said: “let’s play for the sodas”. Then it can be seen the most thrilling plays. In the novel,Taylor, from the third base coach box begins to shout “Mama” at the cuban pitcher until breaking his concentration. The Giants benefited from that to score a run. The way the writer mixes baseball details with the players intimacies creates a tense atmosphere that only ends at the last page of the book.<\/p>\n In parallel it happens a passional story that modifies the novel’s exciting tone to another full of suspense. Brock handles very well his knowledge of cuban culture. This allows him to fill the episodes with expressive images.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Alfonso L.
