{"id":19546,"date":"2012-02-14T13:55:10","date_gmt":"2012-02-14T21:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/?p=19546"},"modified":"2012-02-17T20:18:07","modified_gmt":"2012-02-18T04:18:07","slug":"negro-leagues-db-update-1912-1913-negro-leagues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/14\/negro-leagues-db-update-1912-1913-negro-leagues\/","title":{"rendered":"Negro Leagues DB Update: 1912 &amp; 1913 Negro Leagues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve posted two more Negro league seasons, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/year.php?yearID=1912\">1912<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/year.php?yearID=1913\">1913<\/a>.&#160; The number of games between the best black professionals gets a little sparser with each year you go backward.&#160; It&#8217;s not that they were playing fewer games overall, it&#8217;s just that their opponents were much more likely to be white semipro or amateur teams.<\/p>\n<p>Important teams operated in smaller cities and unusual locations. Paterson, New Jersey, enjoyed its sole entry into the blackball sweepstakes with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/organization.php?franchID=SET\">Smart Set<\/a>, run by former major league pitcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/baseballgauge\/player.php?ID=112446\">Dick Cogan<\/a>.&#160; Schenectady saw the arrival of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/team.php?yearID=1913&amp;teamID=MOH&amp;LGOrd=1\">Mohawk Giants<\/a> in 1913, complete with plaid warmup jackets:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19548\" style=\"width: 622px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/2012\/02\/14\/negro-leagues-db-update-1912-1913-negro-leagues\/schenectady-gazette_5-2-1913_p15\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19548\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19548\" class=\" wp-image-19548\" src=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Schenectady-Gazette_5-2-1913_p15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Schenectady-Gazette_5-2-1913_p15.jpg 1345w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Schenectady-Gazette_5-2-1913_p15-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Schenectady-Gazette_5-2-1913_p15-1024x392.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Schenectady Mohawk Giants, 1913<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two major resort hotels in Springs Valley, Indiana, founded rival black teams, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/organization.php?franchID=WBS\">West Baden Sprudels<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/organization.php?franchID=FLP\">French Lick Plutos<\/a>.&#160; They were named after (and probably intended to promote) the brands of mineral water sold by each hotel, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pluto_Water\">Pluto Water<\/a> and Sprudel Water.&#160; The teams themselves were serious operations&#8212;the West Baden club was managed from 1910 to 1913 by none other than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=758\">C. I. Taylor<\/a>.&#160; In 1911 they defeated a second-string Pittsburgh Pirates squad 2 to 1.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19557\" style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/2012\/02\/14\/negro-leagues-db-update-1912-1913-negro-leagues\/westbadenspringshotel\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19557\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19557\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19557\" src=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/westbadenspringshotel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/westbadenspringshotel.jpg 539w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/westbadenspringshotel-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Postcard showing the West Baden Springs Hotel, ca. 1910<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The major black teams the Midwest did travel to the east coast occasionally, and vice versa, most notably in the big event of 1913: a 14-game series between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/team.php?yearID=1913&amp;teamID=CAG&amp;LGOrd=1\">Chicago American Giants<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/team.php?yearID=1913&amp;teamID=NLG&amp;LGOrd=1\">New York Lincoln Giants<\/a> for the &#8220;colored world championship.&#8221;&#160; Led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=843\">Cyclone Joe Williams<\/a>, the Lincolns dominated, winning 9 games to 4 (with one tie).&#160; Williams went 5-2 with a save in the series, with one shutout.&#160; (The loss would motivate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/manager.php?ID=266\">Rube Foster<\/a> to raid the Lincolns for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=478\">John Henry Lloyd<\/a> in 1914.)<\/p>\n<p>In coming weeks, look for 1908-1911 Negro leagues, plus more Cuban seasons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve posted two more Negro league seasons, 1912 and 1913.&#160; The number of games between the best black professionals gets a little sparser with each year you go backward.&#160; It&#8217;s not that they were playing fewer games overall, it&#8217;s just that their opponents were much more likely to be white semipro or amateur teams.
