Aquella noche me levanté varias veces. They filled the bottle with some papers where they wrote their boyhood experiences. Games, friendships, girls, coins, songs’ lyrics, candies cover and even sand from the sea. That night I dreamed that I grabbed a bottle of kolita Sifón, that great soda beverage that was bottled in Cumaná, Venezuela, along with my friends we put inside the bottle a piece of thread from a kit, some hair of the girl we spied, a marble, an aeromint candy cover, a fragment of rubber ball, and a paper I took from under my bed mattress. My friends complained that after forty years we weren’t going to live around anymore, that maybe some gardener could break the bottle, or who knew what was going to happen with our lives.

That paper drew the light rays through the window the midday of March 16, 1969. The announcer said on the radio: “Zingara. Bobby Solo”. “Prendi questa mano zingara. Dimmi pure che destino havro…” A trumpet crossed the song. “Extra de Notirumbos. In the worst aircrash recalled in Venezuela all the passengers at the Viasa plane flying to USA died when the plane crashed near the “Grano de Oro” airport at Maracaibo.”

Among the passengers were the Lara Cardinals owner, Antonio Herrera and the ballplayers Carlos Santelíz and Isaías Látigo Chávez.” A metallic noise came from the bathroom. When I looked inside, two red lines dropped through Felipe’s cheeks. The blade razor rebounded from the faucet and fell down on the bidet. He covered his hand with toilette paper and grabbed the door’s frame. He wasn’t going to know anymore about that guy who made him be late at home with an errand for his mother when some noon he stayed listening to a radio about a young pitcher of the Distrito Federal team who had battled against the Nueva Esparta team for 13 innings and despite he lost the game, he struckout 18 and almost got the win. Felipe patted my shoulders as he shook his head. He stood up with the paper on his cheek. He opened the cabinet and took out a baseball card from a secret compartment. He stayed looking at the Látigo’s picture and told me how he had exchanged punches with another boy who tried to steal the card of his hero.

I asked if that was the pitcher who him and Jesús Mario said he transformed that mediocre Magallanes team from the middle of the sixties. Felipe spread his index finger with saliva and pressed it on the wound. “El Látigo not only transformed that Magallanes team, when he was the pitcher the team was able of beating the Caracas Lions, theLa GuairaSharksor even an MLB team.”

Jesús Mario recalled that he was coming out from a make up test in high school when he listened that “El Látigo” had made his debut in MLB and despite the San Francisco Giants lost with the Chicago Cubs, “El Látigo” had retired Ron Santo and Ernie Banks. “The news came from a radio in a house, it relaxed me and made me have good expectations about what I had done in the test.”

I asked Felipe if “El Látigo” was the pitcher who had made them jump around the bedroom, they didn’t care about Dad’s madness, nor even that “El Látigo” was playing for the hated rivals Caracas Lions. Because he had retired 25 batters of theValenciaIndustriales in a row. Felipe said yes and dropped his face. “How was he going to do to listen or see again a game where “El Látigo” pitched?

I didn’t want to go playing with my brothers. Dad sat down with me on the bed. He told me that sometimes life was really hard and it’s necessary to take a deep breath and keep going, even with tears in the eyes. He told me that for sure I could see several games where “El Látigo” played. “If you look at you brothers’ Sport Gráfico magazines and seek in the newspapers, you’ll find all the games of “El Látigo” you wanted to see, and so many others you never imagined. And if you ask the people who saw him perform in or out the field, of course you’ll complete the scene of that game.” I complained that my dream had been attending a game in live at the estadio Universitario (Caracas), with a great crowd, the siren burning the air and the tip of “El Látigo” left spike aiming to the sky. Dad patted me on the shoulder and gave me a hug.

Some nights ago I got my finger paralyzed on the remote control. There it was again the movie. The boys were taking the bottle out from the garden forty years later. The papers were fractured, the coins rusted and the sea sand was a thin dust almost invisible. That night I got up many times. It’s the only occasion when I have continued a dream. My friends kept looking at the seized lithography of the kolita Sifón bottle. It could only be read for someone who had seen its original state. From the kit thread it only remained little specks, the hair of the girl looked transparent. The marble got rugose. About the aeromint candy cover it could only be seen the blue ribbon used to open the package. The fragment of rubber ball smelled to humidity. And the sheet of paper broke in two pieces when we took it out from the bottle. We could hardly put it together on the grass. The title appeared in dyeing letters: “Látigo Chávez last interview”. At the foot of the page it could be read Sport Gráfico and the number of the page.

Alfonso L.
