Alfonso L. The native of Ponchatoula, Louissiana (October, 02nd, 1934) had an acceptable career as an MLB pitcher. He had eight seasons with double digits in his wins, got his top in 1967 with 22 wins, playing for the Detroit Tigers.Wilson started his professional baseball career in 1953 with the Bisbee-Douglas team in the Texas-Arizona League. He fractured a hand and while he was injured, he began his pitching practices.

On June 26th, 1962;Wilson made history because he became the first Black pitcher who hurled a no-hitter in the American League. He did it before the fourth place in the standing, the Los Angeles Angels and Bo Belinsky who some weeks before had thrown a no-hitter.Wilson arrived to this game with a 5-2 record, he had won his last three games for the eighth place Boston Red Sox. That would be the fifth time a Red Sox pitcher hurled a no-hitter inFenwayPark, the first right hander since 1917 whenErnieShore came to pitch for Babe Ruth after he was expulsed in the first inning. In his last startWilson had kept the Detroit Tigers hitless during the first five innings.

Wilson also became the second pitcher who hit a home run in his no-hitter, the first was Jim Tobin of the Boston Braves in 1944, his420 feetshot in the third inning, gave him the only run he needed to win. Belinsky pitched very well. He allowed just three hits and struckout 10 before leaving for a pinch hitter in the eighth frame. He accepted an unearned run in the fourth inning, it mixed a Lee Thomas error and singles of Pete Runnels and carroll Hardy.

Wilsonstruckout 4 and walked 4 while mixing his fastball with the slider and a slow curve. His most difficult moments happened at the beginning of the game. After retiring the first inning in a perfect way, he walked Thomas to open the second frame, he arrived to second base on Buck Rodgers’ grounder. ThenWilsonretired Earl Averill and Edie Yost on grounders to the infield.

Wilsonkept the Angels under control until the fifth inning. There he walked Averill and Yost after one out. Joe Koppe hit a high pop up to the Green Monster, Carl Yastrzemski took it with his back against the wall. Belinsky gave the last out on and easy pop up to center field.

Another difficult moment came in the sixth inning. After two outs, Billy Moran ran in first base after getting a walk. Thomas hit a sharp grounder between first and second base. The first baseman Runnels made the defensive play of the game by diving to catch the ball and then running to arrive to the base on time.

After retiring in a rush the seventh inning, the third baseman Frank Malzone savedWilsonwith a great play in the eighth inning. Koppe lead the inning off with a foul pop up to the third base dugout. Malzone ran to the dugout, put the right foot on the first step and bent to the side to make a backhanded catch.

In the ninth inning, with the crowd on the border of the seats andWilsonhurling bullits, Moran led the inning off with a pop up to shallow left field that seemed aTexasleagur hit. The short stop Eddie Bressoud ran to the foul line a caught the ball with one hand. The next batter was Leon Roberts the American League home run leader. In a 1-0 count, Roberts hit an easy pop up to Gary Geiger in center field. Then it came to bat the dangerous Thomas, in a 1-2 count he hit a tremendous shot to deep center field where Geiger got it400 feetfrom home plate.Wilsonraised his arms. Tom Yawkey, the Red Sox owner, rewarded him with a 1000 $ raise in his salary.

Alfonso L.
