Almost for sure that every Dodgers’ fan has it in his/her memory. For a great follower of Sanford Koufax like the venezuelan sports journalist Humberto Acosta, it would be a monstrous sin to forget that moment when Koufax began to show his best performances as a pitcher.

On June 30th, 1962 Koufax climbed Dodger Stadium’s mound before the New York Mets. In 1961, he had experienced his first remarkable record, 18-13. Koufax arrived to that game with 10 wins and 4 losses for the team at second place in the National League. Bob Miller would start for the Mets.

Koufax wasn`t as impressive as in his future no-hitters. He walked 5 and could escape from some difficult situations. Despite of all of that he still could get 13 struckouts.

Koufax retired the first inning the perfect way. He had his first frightening experience in the second inning. Frank Thomas hit a sharp grounder toward the hole between second and third base. Maury Wills ran to his right, made a backhanded stop and threw Thomas out at first.

The Dodgers scored in the first inning through a Willie Davis triple, singles by Tommy Davis and Frank Howard with a walk in between, a two-run double by John Roseboro and a Larry Burright single. Howard added a home run in the seventh inning.

In the sixth inning Koufax experienced another terrifying moment before the two time National League batting champ Richie Ashburn who hit a sharp line drive to left field where Tommy Davis lost the ball for a while in the lights but the he recovered to complete a splendid running catch.

Koufax had walked Ashburn and Felix Mantilla early in the game, none of them advanced to second base. He passed Thomas in the seventh frame and Elio Chacón in the eighth, none of them moved up.

Koufax walked Gene Woodling in the ninth frame, a surprising lefthanded pinch hitter to begin the inning. With Joe Chriostopher inserted as pinch runner, the ever-dangerous Ashburn hit a line drive to left field line that curved foul at the last moment. He then hit a grounder to short stop that Wills handled to force Christopher out at second base.

Afterwards Rod Kanehl hit a two-strike bouncer to third base that Jim Gilliam gloved and forced Ashburn out at second. Mantilla hit a high hopper to short stop in a 2-1 count, Wills took the ball high above his head and threw the ball to first base to complete the last out. Koufax got the first of his 4 no-hitters. Later in that season he was sidelined because of a circulation problem in his left index finger. He finished the year with a 14-7 record.

Alfonso L.
