Jim Pagliaroni y Pete Runnells sencillearon.

I also read a lot about Morehead’s no-hitter because it had been the last one for a Red Sox hurler. I had so much interest in the August 01st, 1962 no-hitter because it had happened five weeks after his teammate Earl Wilson’s no hitter. It happenend as visitors atComiskeyPark, before the veteran and always competitive Early Wynn. Just one walk separated Monbouquette from perfection.

William Charles Monbouquette was one of those strange examples of the local boy who plays for the hometown team. He was born on August 11th,1936 in theBoston’s suburb ofMedford. The righthander nicknamed “Monbo” was signed by the Red Sox from high school. He made his debut withCorning in the Pony League in 1955. He arrived to the Red Sox in 1958 and soon was considered as a workhorse. In a six and a half years span he never failed a start. Monbo had double figure wins during six years in a row, including the 20 victories in 1963. After leaving the Red Sox in 1965 he pitched briefly for the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

Monbouquette came to this game with an 8-10 record. The Red Sox were eighth in the American League standing. Wynn, 42, looked for his 298 win. In his last four outings, Monbouquette had only stayed for 11 innings on the mound, allowed 17 runs and 19 hits. He didn’t win since July 08th.

In the first frame he retired Luis Aparicio in a grounder to third base. Struckout Bob Sadowski and Joe Cunnigham hit a pop up to third base.

The second inning was the hardest for Monbouquette. After retiring Floyd Robinson with grounder to second base. Charley Maxwell hit a line drive the right field corner. Lu Clinton ran to the warning track and made a great catch against the wall. Al Smith became the only White Sox player who stepped on first base, he got a walk. Jim Landis struckout.

Monbouquette retired the last 22 batters in a row. Just seven ball were hit to the outfield in the whole game.

One of the most difficult plays for theBostondefense happened in the sixth inning when Sherman Lollar hit a pop up to shallow right field. Second baseman Billy Gardner ran backwards and made a great catch.

In the other side Wynn also dominated his rivals. In the first five frames he had only allowed 2 hits ofClinton. But he started to get tired in the eighth inning. There he walked Gary Geiger who was out at second base in a steal attempt. After striking out Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Pagliaroni and Pete Runnells hit singles.Clintonfollowed with his third hit to plate in the only run in the game, in the spikes of Pagliaroni.

In the bottom of the eighth, Maxwell was the first out on a pop up in foul. Smith struckout. Landis hit one of the deepest shots in the game, Geiger caught it near the center field wall.

In the ninth he struckout Lollar. Nelli Fox came as a pinch hitter fro Wynn and was out in a grounder to Frank Malzone at third base. Luis Aparicio struckout.

Alfonso L.
