{"id":21844,"date":"2012-09-07T22:34:44","date_gmt":"2012-09-08T05:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/?p=21844"},"modified":"2012-09-08T14:01:18","modified_gmt":"2012-09-08T21:01:18","slug":"negro-leagues-db-update-1907-national-association-of-colored-professional-clubs-of-the-united-states-and-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/07\/negro-leagues-db-update-1907-national-association-of-colored-professional-clubs-of-the-united-states-and-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Negro Leagues DB Update: 1907 National Association of Colored Professional Clubs of the United States and Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contrary to popular belief, blackball teams playing in a &#8216;real&#8217; league did not begin in 1920.&#160; In 1886, there was an attempt to start a 10 team &#8220;Southern Colored Base Ballist&#8221; league.&#160; In 1887, the National Colored Baseball League managed to play 13 league games before folding.&#160; The 1906 &#8220;ILIP League&#8221; (International League of Independent Professional Clubs) probably wouldn&#8217;t qualify as an actual league under a strict definition, but was more a loose assocation of teams like subsequent &#8220;Negro Leagues&#8221; in the 1908-1919 time period, plus it included two white teams.&#160; But in 1907, the National Association of Colored Professional Clubs of the United States and Cuba was a REAL league, and most likely can claim being the first real Negro Baseball League.&#160; It played a full, although short, season, crowned a champion, and probably&#160;contained the country&#8217;s four best Negro League teams (the Cuban X-Giants having folded after the 1906 season).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/year.php?yearID=1907&amp;tab=1\"><strong>league<\/strong><\/a> was won by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/team.php?yearID=1907&amp;teamID=PG\"><strong>Philadelphia Giants<\/strong><\/a>, who had also been the best team in 1906. Philadelphia was an offensive powerhouse led by 21 year old C <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=624\"><strong>Bruce Petway<\/strong><\/a>, Hall of Fame LF <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=375\"><strong>Pete Hill<\/strong><\/a>, and left-handed P\/CF <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=524\"><strong>Danny McClellan<\/strong><\/a>. In addition, Hall of Famer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=478\"><strong>John Henry Lloyd<\/strong><\/a> played SS.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable items:<\/p>\n<p>We get the end of careers for both Hall of Famer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=1447\"><strong>Frank Grant<\/strong><\/a> and for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=1391\"><strong>Sol White<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We get 19 year old pitcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?ID=1443\"><strong>Johnny Bright<\/strong><\/a>, who in addition to being notable for having the same name as his team&#8217;s owner (John M.
