{"id":22996,"date":"2013-01-12T05:39:15","date_gmt":"2013-01-12T13:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/?p=22996"},"modified":"2013-01-18T05:54:00","modified_gmt":"2013-01-18T13:54:00","slug":"starting-pitchers-and-hall-of-fame-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/12\/starting-pitchers-and-hall-of-fame-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting Pitchers and Hall of Fame Numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jack Morris&#8217; Hall of Fame candidacy has generated a discussion about HOF numbers for pitchers which I feel is very useful &#8211; partly because it raises the question of whether there is a &#8220;sabermetric&#8221; way to objectively measure a starting pitcher&#8217;s career performance.<\/p>\n<p>Here is how the CAWS Career Gauge suggests it may be done &#8211; using win shares.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&#160;Add together the win shares for a pitcher&#8217;s 10 best seasons and call it his Core Value (CV).<\/li>\n<li>Add to this 25% of the difference between his career win shares (CWS) and his CV &#8211; to give credit for &#8220;longevity.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>CAWS&#160; =&#160; CV&#160; + .25(CWS &#8211; CV)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here is what the results look like for some selected pitchers.&#160; The first number is CWS, the second is CV and the third is the CAWS score.
