font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"><em>This is the first installment of a new series on this blog regarding which major league players had the best careers at each position as determined by the NEWS HOF Gauge.<\/em><span>  <\/span><\/span><!--more--><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">This means that I will list those players at each position who had the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>best careers<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">during the \u00e2\u20ac\u015320<sup>th<\/sup> century +\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (1901 to the present).<span>  <\/span>A player has to have played at least ten full seasons through 2007 to be ranked.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">It is important to note that the NEWS Gauge attempts to rank players according to their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>careers<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">(employing a creative use of win shares).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><span>  <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">The NEWS suggests that to simply look at a player\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s total career win shares can be misleading.<span>  <\/span>A better way to determine <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">career value<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"> is to first find the number of win shares that a player earned during his ten best seasons (his <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">core value<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">).<span>  <\/span>Then add to this number 25% of his other win shares.<span>  <\/span>This gives a better balance of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153peak\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and longevity.<span>  <\/span>(For an explanation of this approach, please see the excerpts from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">on this site.)<span>  <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>Better Than?<\/strong><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">Is comparing two players\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 career values (their NEWS scores) the same as saying that one player is\/was <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153better than\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"> the other?<span>  <\/span>Not quite.<span>  <\/span>When a fan says that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153 Pedro Martinez is a better pitcher than Tom Glavine.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c we cannot be quite sure what he means.<span>  <\/span>If he means that at his best he would rather have Pedro pitching for his team than Tom, then there are probably few fans of the game who would disagree with this statement.<span>  <\/span>But does that mean that Pedro has had a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>better career<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">through 2007 than Glavine?<span>  <\/span>That is a very different question.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">I believe that the players who belong in the Hall of Fame are those who had the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>best careers on the field<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">(plus a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>few<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">other players who deserve to be inducted even though they may not have had the numbers).<span>  <\/span>And that is what the NEWS score attempts to point out \u00e2\u20ac\u201c who had the <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">best careers on the field<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">.<span>  <\/span>So, if I say that Tom Glavine, with a NEWS score of 231, has had a <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">better career<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"> than Pedro Martinez with a score of 217 (so far), I am not saying that Glavine <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">is\/was a better pitcher<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"> than Pedro.<span>  <\/span>I am saying that Glavine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s career deserves <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> consideration.<span>  <\/span>It may be that Pedro\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s career to date also deserves such consideration because of its moments of brilliance (think Sandy Koufax).<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">The NEWS HOF Gauge seeks to point out those players who appear to have <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>obvious <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city><\/strong> numbers <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">based on their <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">career performance<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><span>  <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">It suggests that these players deserve to be in the Hall based on what they did on-the-field.<span>  <\/span>Of course, there may be other players (who do not have the numbers) who should be in the Hall of Fame.<span>  <\/span>Roy Campanella, for example, is a player who did not attain <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers (according to the NEWS Gauge) but who I feel should definitely be in the Hall of Fame.<span>  <\/span>And, of course, there are others.<span>  <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"><o:p> <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">This series of articles will deal with a slightly different approach to interpreting the NEWS score \u00e2\u20ac\u201c than that which was presented in my book, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>BASEBALL\u00e2\u20ac\u2122S BEST: The TRUE Hall of Famers.<\/strong><span>  <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">The approach has not changed nor has the player\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s NEWS score<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"><strong>.<\/strong><span>  <\/span>What has been tweaked is the score required at some positions to establish <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers.<span>  <\/span>I have done this for two important reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"><span>1.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">Feedback from many fans and my careful consideration of that feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\"><span>2.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">The fact that if the Win Shares system has a flaw it is related to the amount of credit given to certain positions for defensive reasons.<span>  <\/span>The positions that seem to suffer somewhat in this context are catcher, shortstop, center field, second base and third base.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">For these reasons, new benchmarks for <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers (according to the NEWS score) have been created for these positions.<span>  <\/span>This series of articles will deal with those new benchmarks and the players who met them during their careers.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoTitle\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'; font-weight: normal\">Here are the number of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century players at each position that the NEWS Gauge suggests have <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><strong>obvious <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">There are a total of 108 position players here.<span>  <\/span><strong>This does not mean<\/strong> that these are the <strong>only<\/strong> position players who should be in the Hall of Fame.<span>  <\/span><strong>It does mean <\/strong>that each of these 108 position players has the performance numbers to merit inclusion in the Hall.<span>  <\/span>As noted above, there may be other players who deserve induction \u00e2\u20ac\u201c even though they did not have the numbers.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><o:p><\/o:p>In the series of articles to follow, I will point out the following.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><span>1.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">The 20<sup>th<\/sup> century players at each position who have <strong>obvious <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">HOF<\/st1:place><\/st1:city> numbers<\/strong>.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><span>2.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">The other players who make up the top 25 at that position.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\"><span>3.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal\">      <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Book Antiqua'\">The players who are in the Hall but who do not make the top 25.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;
