{"id":25535,"date":"2013-08-23T08:40:20","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T15:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/?p=25535"},"modified":"2013-08-23T08:40:20","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T15:40:20","slug":"while-new-leagues-are-slow-to-develop-independent-roster-in-majors-grows-rapidly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/23\/while-new-leagues-are-slow-to-develop-independent-roster-in-majors-grows-rapidly\/","title":{"rendered":"While New Leagues Are Slow to Develop,  Independent Roster in Majors Grows Rapidly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">Independent Baseball is continuing to turn out major league players in impressive numbers&#8212;two more just this week&#8212;but operators are not finding it nearly as easy to start new leagues or even to nail down new franchises.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">A new league has not started and lasted since the <b>Can-Am League <\/b>launched in 2005, and even that was somewhat of a shift from one set of books under the <b>Northeast League <\/b>banner to the current setup.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Atlantic League <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Founder <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Frank Boulton<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> had to put his planned eastern seaboard developmental league on hold for at least another year although he emphasized &#8220;we do, however, believe in the economic model and the need based in the game of baseball for a circuit like the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Diamond League <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">to exist.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Meanwhile, Commissioner <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Miles Wolff<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, who has been interested in some of the same markets, has not found an easy go in trying to get the Can-Am back to at least six teams (it has five at present).&#160; His present target is to have news &#8220;hopefully, by early October.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Then, there is the effort by major league executive <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Dan Evans<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> and entrepreneur <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Nick Desrosiers <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">to start a new <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Northern League.&#160; <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Its latest known development has charm in that a team would be based in <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Northeast Iowa <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">next to the legendary &#8220;Field of Dreams&#8221; movie site in what is being called <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">All-Star Ballpark Heaven<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, but the fact remains that is only the second team <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">(Elkhart, IN)<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> to be identified with the start of the &#8217;14 season only about nine months away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pirates Call on Two Indy Grads<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">The <b>National League Central<\/b>-leading <b>Pittsburgh Pirates <\/b>have been the latest major league team to draw on players recently playing in Independent leagues, getting a big boost for a tired bullpen from southpaw <b>Kris Johnson<\/b> and on Wednesday utilizing <b>Felix Pie <\/b>to fill in at the top of their lineup when two of their outfielders were ailing.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Johnson, who was in the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">American Association (Kansas City, KS)<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> two years ago, became the 10<\/span><sup style=\"line-height: 19px;\">th<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> former Indy player to make his major league debut this season, a high-water mark since the <\/span><i style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Independent Baseball Insider <\/i><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">started recording such activity in 2008.&#160; Pie, who spent part of last summer in the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Atlantic League (Camden, NJ)<\/b><i style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, <\/i><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">is the 33<\/span><sup style=\"line-height: 19px;\">rd<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> player with Independent experience to appear in a major league game this season, one more than in all of 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Johnson, who was 6-3, 3.23 in 16 starts for the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">T-Bones<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, was sent back to Triple-A <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Indianapolis<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> in favor of another fresh arm, but it was only after a memorable major league debut in which he gave a tired bullpen a break by hurling five scoreless innings before allowing two runs in a 16-inning loss to <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Arizona.<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&#8220;I told him I was just so proud of him,&#8221; Pittsburgh <b>Manager Clint Hurdle <\/b>told <i>MLB.com.&#160; <\/i>&#8220;The job he did for us (six innings, five hits, two walks, five strikeouts) was exciting to watch and obviously well needed for our club and our bullpen.&#8221;&#160; It also could bode well for the 28-year-old, who is 10-3, 2,18 at Indianapolis, when rosters expand September 1.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">It was exactly two years between major league appearances for Pie, who went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored Pittsburgh&#8217;s only run in a 2-1 loss at <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">San Diego <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Wednesday.&#160; &#8220;It&#8217;s been a tough two years,&#8221; Pie told <\/span><i style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">MLB.com.<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 13px; J.
