{"id":25765,"date":"2013-09-20T06:32:07","date_gmt":"2013-09-20T13:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/?p=25765"},"modified":"2013-09-20T06:32:07","modified_gmt":"2013-09-20T13:32:07","slug":"salvi-family-claims-the-independent-games-first-double-with-championships-in-both-gary-and-schaumburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/20\/salvi-family-claims-the-independent-games-first-double-with-championships-in-both-gary-and-schaumburg\/","title":{"rendered":"Salvi Family Claims the Independent Game&#8217;s First Double With Championships in Both Gary and Schaumburg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">The last time I wrote extensively about <b>Chicago <\/b>attorney <b>Pat Salvi <\/b>was at the end of last season&#8217;s college football season when this proud father&#8212;plus wife and business partner <b>Lindy<\/b>&#8212;were<b> <\/b>rightfully popping their parent buttons because they had two sons on the <b>Notre Dame <\/b>football team.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">They have two<b> <\/b>more reasons to be more than a little boastful now because they have pulled off what is believed to be a first for Independent Baseball.&#160; The Salvi-owned <b>Gary (IN) SouthShore RailCats <\/b>made the <b>American Association <\/b>playoffs as the wild card, the team outside of the three division champions with the best record.&#160; <b>Wichita, KS<\/b> was the favorite among the four postseason teams because of the way the <b>Wingnuts<\/b> had broken the league record for victories.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Playing in the same <b>Central Division<\/b>, th<b>e <\/b>RailCats had to dispose of the always tough <b>North <\/b>winners, <b>Fargo, ND<\/b>, then they steamrolled Wichita, winning the last two games on the Wingnuts&#8217;<b> <\/b>turf.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">But that was only the beginning.&#160; Another Chicago-area team owned by the Salvi family, the <b>Schaumburg Boomers, <\/b>became the first team in the 21-year history of the <b>Frontier League<\/b> to win all six postseason games, sweeping <b>Florence, KY <\/b>and <b>Lake Erie (Avon, OH).&#160; <\/b>So the Salvi trophy case has two championship mementoes to keep shined.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">&#160; * * * *<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>ANXIOUS FOR MORE INDEPENDENT BASEBALL COVERAGE?<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">We Have It at <\/span><\/b><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indybaseballchatter.com\/\">www.IndyBaseballChatter.com<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Atlantic, American Association Top 2,000,000 Fans Again<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">It almost had to happen since Independent Baseball&#8217;s top two drawing leagues, the <b>Atlantic <\/b>and <b>American <\/b>Association<b>,<\/b> had established new regular season attendance records last year when stadiums were opened in<b> <\/b>the <b>Lone Star State <\/b>cities of <b>Sugar Land <\/b>and <b>Laredo<\/b> and the <b>North American League <\/b>quit operating.&#160; So attendance dropped by slightly more than 300,000 fans from 7,073,079 to this season&#8217;s 6,630,389.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Still, the Atlantic League (2,254,554) and American Association (2,150,031) once again topped two million fans, the Association for the third year in a row. &#160; &#160; &#160; &#160; &#160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Winnipeg <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">(American Association) moved back to the No. 1 position among the 46 teams in average attendance by improving nearly 200 fans per game to 5,880 while Sugar Land retained the overall lead in total attendance with 382,059 fans attending their 69 home openings (5,537 average).&#160; <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Kansas City, KS <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">(American Association) climbed two notches to third in average crowd (5,420) with Atlantic League teams <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Long Island, NY <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">and <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Somerset, NJ <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">next in line at 5,303 and 5,223.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Final regular season league attendance as reported by <\/span><i style=\"font-size: 13px; The same is true for <b>Cleveland <\/b>starter <b>Scott Kazmir<\/b>, who re-built his career last season in the <b>Atlantic League (Sugar Land, TX).<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">It is somewhat easier for <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Boston <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">southpaw reliever <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Craig Breslow<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> since the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Red Sox<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> are virtually certain of being in the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">American League <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">playoffs, but this onetime <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Yale University <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">hurler and pre-med student is being saluted both on and off the diamond.<\/span>&#160; The 33-year-old&#8217;s career was saved back in 2004 when he walked across <b>Yale Field <\/b>and signed with the visiting <b>New Jersey Jackals.&#160; <\/b>His<b> <\/b>last 10 appearances&#8212;some of them two-inning stints&#8212;lowered his season ERA to 1.91 for 58 appearances and built his major league career profile to 416 outings.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Breslow will be honored Friday as <b>BoSox Club Man of the Year <\/b>and is the team&#8217;s nominee for the prestigious <b>Roberto Clemente Award <\/b>in which Major League Baseball annually honors one of its players for keeping the <b>Hall of Famers<\/b> spirit of giving alive.&#160; The pitcher is recognized around Boston for his continued willingness to help charities, and his own <b>Strike 3 Foundation<\/b> raises awareness and raises funds for childhood cancer research with revenue now said to top $1 million annually.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;
