{"id":25809,"date":"2013-09-27T14:13:45","date_gmt":"2013-09-27T21:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/?p=25809"},"modified":"2013-09-27T14:13:45","modified_gmt":"2013-09-27T21:13:45","slug":"coaches-players-who-came-through-independent-leagues-will-have-roles-in-american-leagues-postseason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/27\/coaches-players-who-came-through-independent-leagues-will-have-roles-in-american-leagues-postseason\/","title":{"rendered":"Coaches, Players Who Came Through Independent Leagues Will Have Roles in American League&#8217;s Postseason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The constant search this column undertakes to find meaningful stories on current or former Independent Baseball personnel has once again resulted in some nice nuggets heading into major league baseball&#8217;s postseason with the further tip that every fan of the unaffiliated game should lean heavily to the <b>American League<\/b> starting next week.<\/p>\n<p>It is a virtual certainty no less than five players who have toiled in Independent leagues, some of them who clearly did not have other options at the time, will be part of at least American League wild card competition and the number could climb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">This is just a start, too, because no less than three coaches with A.L. teams&#8212;it probably will climb to four&#8212;will be in uniform and popping up on millions of television screens as they carry out their duties.&#160; For the most part, the coaches worked their way up after mediocre playing careers which came up short of major league stardom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Oakland<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> has two coaches from the Indy ranks, both with intriguing back stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Mal Fichman<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, a longtime Independent manager and in more recent years a scout who has signed umpteen players from all over the non-affiliated world while working for various MLB teams, likes to call the Athletics&#8217; first-year bullpen coach <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Darren Bush<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> &#8220;the definition of perseverance&#8221;.&#160; The tag certainly fits since he was not drafted out of college, spent three years playing in <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">the Frontier League (Zanesville, OH<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> and <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Springfield, IL)<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> before a brief opportunity as an outfielder and catcher in affiliated Class A, then finished playing for <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Yuba-Sutter (Marysville, CA)<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> of the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Western League.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Bush also started a successful managerial career in Indy leagues, most likely getting his first attention from the Athletics after a powerful 34-12 second-half in 2004 with <b>Quebec<\/b>, which now has won five consecutive <b>Can-Am League<\/b> titles.&#160; He joined the Oakland farm system the very next year, but spent eight seasons proving himself before the promotion to the major leagues this summer.<\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Ariel Prieto<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> is listed in multiple locations as merely &#8220;coach&#8221; with the A&#8217;s although by digging a little deeper it seems this onetime Western League pitcher <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">(Palm Springs, CA) <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">was given a huge jump within the system so he could give outfield standout <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Yoenis Cespedes<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> a fellow <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Cuban<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"> within the team&#8217;s traveling party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><\/b><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Rafael Belliard<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, who played at <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Albany, NY <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">in what at the time was the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Northeast League, <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">continues to serve as <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Detroit&#8217;s <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">infield and first base coach, but there is another significant first-year contributor who is just a win or so away from helping take <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Cleveland <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">into the postseason.&#160; That would be the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Tribe&#8217;s <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">pitching coach, <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Mickey Callaway, <\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">who probably could not have envisioned this opportunity when he served as&#160; player-coach five years ago at <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Laredo, TX<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">, now part of the <\/span><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">American Association.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\"><\/b>One of Mickey Callaway&#8217;s<b> <\/b>star pitchers, <b>Scott Kazmir<\/b>, will be right alongside presuming <b>Cleveland <\/b>does not let up and secures a wild card playoff spot.&#160; Kazmir rebounded from his season with <b>Sugar Land, TX <\/b>to once again become a proficient major leaguer.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b>Detroit&#8217;s <\/b>21-game winner <b>Max Scherzer <\/b>(21-3) heads a contingent of four&#8211;possibly five&#8211;other players with time in Indy circuits who also will be in the <b>American League <\/b>playoffs.&#160; Scherzer <b>(Fort Worth, TX, American Association)<\/b> will join the <b>Boston <\/b>trio of shortstop <b>Stephen Drew (Camden, NJ, <\/b>Atlantic), outfielder <b>Daniel Nava (Chico, CA, Golden League)<\/b> and southpaw reliever <b>Craig Breslow (New Jersey Jackals, <\/b>then in the <b>Northeast League, <\/b>now in the <b>Can-Am)<\/b> and if <b>Texas <\/b>can sneak in its roster will include reliever <b>Tanner Scheppers (St. Paul, MN, <\/b>American Association).<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;
