{"id":26812,"date":"2013-12-20T05:39:24","date_gmt":"2013-12-20T13:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seamheads.com\/?p=26812"},"modified":"2013-12-20T05:39:24","modified_gmt":"2013-12-20T13:39:24","slug":"twins-nationals-take-two-of-independent-baseballs-power-hitters-in-ziegler-and-peterson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/20\/twins-nationals-take-two-of-independent-baseballs-power-hitters-in-ziegler-and-peterson\/","title":{"rendered":"Twins, Nationals Take Two of Independent Baseball&#8217;s Power Hitters in Ziegler and Peterson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">With so much talk in the baseball universe about the lack of power hitting prospects, it is good to see that people in the <b>Minnesota <\/b>and <b>Washington <\/b>scouting departments have been paying attention.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">They have grabbed two of the best long-ball artists the Independent leagues have produced recently.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Twins <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">stepped up to ink the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">American Association&#8217;s <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">new home run record holder, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">C. J. Ziegler<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, who also was named that league&#8217;s Player of the Year, then was tabbed by <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Baseball America <\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">as Independent Player of the Year.&#160; The <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Washington Nationals <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">signed free agent <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Brock Peterson, <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">who hit 25 homers and drove in 86 runs in less than a full season for <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">St. Louis&#8217;s <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">top farm club in <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Memphis, TN.<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">While neither has been invited to a major league spring training camp, it seems logical both players, primarily first basemen, will get some looks during camp.&#160; This is especially true for Peterson since the former <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Atlantic Leaguer (Bridgeport, CT, <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">&#8217;11-12) got his first major league opportunity last season, going 2-for-26 with two RBI while being used primarily as a right-handed pinch hitter as the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Cardinals <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">were bidding for their eventual <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">National League <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">title.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Ziegler toppled the American Association home run record <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">(Brandon Sing, <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">27, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Sioux Falls, SD, <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">2010) when he hit 30 for <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Wichita, KS<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> while driving in 99 runs in 100 games.&#160; It is not out of the question that the 28-year-old Ziegler, who also has played in the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Frontier League <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">and the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">North American League<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> for four consecutive seasons, could end up at some time in the future battling long time <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Can-Am League <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">first baseman <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Chris Colabello <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">for playing time with Minnesota.&#160; Their stock could have actually improved somewhat earlier this week when veteran <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Ryan Doumit <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">was dealt to <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Atlanta.&#160; <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">While Doumit is a switch-hitter, his absence opens the door at least a crack for either player to replace his power potential as a designated hitter.&#160; Incidentally, Colabello has been struggling in the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Dominican Republic<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, going without an extra base hit in his 16 games and hitting only .164.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>ANXIOUS FOR MORE INDEPENDENT BASEBALL COVERAGE?<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">We Have It at <\/span><\/b><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indybaseballchatter.com\/\">www.IndyBaseballChatter.com<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&#160;<b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Robinson Cano&#8217;s Cousin Also Joins Seattle Organization<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b>Seattle <\/b>made another interesting signing only days after inking <b>Robinson Cano <\/b>for $240 million.&#160; The <b>Mariners<\/b> have given his cousin, third baseman-outfielder <b>Burt Reynolds<\/b>,<b> <\/b>a minor league deal.&#160; The 25-year-old <b>Dominican <\/b>native has shown some power by hitting 26 home runs in three Independent seasons, 2011-12 with <b>Newark, NJ (Can-Am League) <\/b>and last season with <b>Camden, NJ (Atlantic League).&#160; <\/b>Reynolds has never played in more than 71 games in any of six minor league seasons with his best batting average of .289&#160; in a rookie league in the <b>Tampa Bay <\/b>minor league system his first season (&#8217;08).<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Another former Camden player, outfielder <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Felix Pie<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, who logged some time with <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Pittsburgh <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">last season, is going to give the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Korean <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">league a shot, signing with the <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Hanwah Eagles.<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nuno Credited With Best Control Among Yankees<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><b><\/b>Southpaw <b>Vidal Nuno<\/b>, who remains on the <b>New York Yankees&#8217; <\/b>40-man roster and could be a sleeper to get into the <b>Bombers&#8217; <\/b>rotation next season, has been dubbed by <i>Baseball America <\/i>as the pitcher with the best control among the team&#8217;s prospects.&#160; The 26-year-old, who started six games in the <b>Frontier League (Washington, PA)<\/b> in 2011 (2-3, 2.83) after being in the <b>Cleveland <\/b>organization and before signing with the Yankees, had a 2.25 earned run average in five games, including three starts, with New York last season.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">&#160;
