{"id":33581,"date":"2020-11-09T16:50:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T21:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/?p=33581"},"modified":"2020-12-04T14:52:45","modified_gmt":"2020-12-04T19:52:45","slug":"negro-leagues-db-update-1926-nnl-fielding-pitching-32-home-runs-for-suttles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/09\/negro-leagues-db-update-1926-nnl-fielding-pitching-32-home-runs-for-suttles\/","title":{"rendered":"Negro Leagues DB Update: 1926 NNL Fielding &amp; Pitching, 32 Home Runs for Suttles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve added newly audited and expanded statistics for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/year.php?yearID=1926&amp;lgID=NNL&amp;tab=standings\">1926 Negro National League<\/a>, including fielding statistics, complete pitching statistics, batters\u2019 hit by pitch, and a handful of new games and corrections to the record.<\/p>\n<p>While I don\u2019t think that counting stats are, by themselves, a particularly good measure of the quality of Negro league ballplayers, it\u2019s worth noting that this audit has produced a new single-season record for home runs by a player in games against Negro league opponents: 32 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=suttl01mul\"><strong>Mule Suttles<\/strong><\/a> of the St. Louis Stars.<\/p>\n<p>The Stars played in Stars Park, which was built up against a trolley car barn that cut into left field, making it a great park for right-handed power hitters. Those numbers are a bit deceiving, though, as the Stars\u2019 schedule was extremely lopsided, with most of their NNL games played at home. Of Suttles\u2019s 89 games, 65 were in Stars Park:<a href=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/09\/negro-leagues-db-update-1926-nnl-fielding-pitching-32-home-runs-for-suttles\/mule-suttles_1926-home-road\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33582\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-33582\" src=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mule-Suttles_1926-Home-Road.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mule-Suttles_1926-Home-Road.png 1832w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mule-Suttles_1926-Home-Road-300x53.png 300w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mule-Suttles_1926-Home-Road-1024x180.png 1024w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mule-Suttles_1926-Home-Road-768x135.png 768w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mule-Suttles_1926-Home-Road-1536x270.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>At these rates a balanced home\/road schedule would give Suttles 18 homers at home, 11 on the road.<\/p>\n<p>A few other statistical highlights from this update, all from the St. Louis Stars:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Suttles also sets single-season Negro league records for triples (19) and extra base hits (79), as well as for slugging percentage with 200 plate appearances or more (.877).<br \/>\n&#8211;The NNL leader in HBP was Stars catcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=murra01mit\"><strong>Mitchell Murray<\/strong><\/a> with 15, which also sets a single-season Negro league record.<br \/>\n&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=bell-01coo\"><strong>Cool Papa Bell<\/strong><\/a> stole 36 bases, which is the second-highest single-season Negro league total we\u2019ve recorded (the highest is Bell\u2019s 49 in 1929).<br \/>\n&#8211;St. Louis pitcher <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=hensl01log\"><strong>Slap Hensley<\/strong><\/a> set a less enviable record by allowing 20 home runs, the most allowed by a Negro league pitcher in a single season (so far). To be fair, he was a workhorse in an extreme hitters\u2019 park who led the league in most counting stats for pitchers, including wins, games pitched, games started, innings pitched, hits allowed, runs &amp; earned runs allowed, walks, and strikeouts.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to fielding, here are the NNL fielders with the most Runs Saved Above Average for each position (excluding pitchers):<\/p>\n<p>C: Mitchell Murray, St. Louis<br \/>\n1B: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=hawki01lem\"><strong>Lemuel Hawkins<\/strong><\/a>, Kansas City<br \/>\n2B: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=demos01bin\"><strong>Bingo DeMoss<\/strong><\/a>, Indianapolis<br \/>\nSS: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=allen01new\"><strong>Newt Allen<\/strong><\/a>, Kansas City<br \/>\n3B: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=malar01dav\"><strong>Dave Malarcher<\/strong><\/a>, Chicago<br \/>\nLF: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=jones01joh\"><strong>Johnny Jones<\/strong><\/a>, Indianapolis\/Detroit<br \/>\nCF: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=lopez01can\"><strong>Cando L\u00f3pez<\/strong><\/a>, Cuban Stars<br \/>\nRF: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/NegroLgs\/player.php?playerID=gardn01jel\"><strong>Jelly Gardner<\/strong><\/a>, Chicago<\/p>\n<p>The best defensive team, by Runs Saved Per 1000 Innings, was the Kansas City Monarchs; the worst was (surprisingly) the St. Louis Stars, though the last-place Dayton Marcos were close.
