{"id":34539,"date":"2024-06-19T13:32:58","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T18:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/?p=34539"},"modified":"2024-06-19T13:32:58","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T18:32:58","slug":"celebrating-the-greatness-of-willie-mays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2024\/06\/19\/celebrating-the-greatness-of-willie-mays\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating the Greatness of Willie Mays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-34540\" src=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mays-Willie-NBHOF-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"Willie Mays\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mays-Willie-NBHOF-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mays-Willie-NBHOF.jpg 367w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/>Yesterday, we all lost number 24, fittingly (albeit sadly) in the year 2024.\u00a0 Now, the last all-time great who debuted in the Negro Leagues is gone.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayswi01.shtml\">Willie Mays<\/a> will perpetually reside in \u201cthe green fields of the mind\u201d&#8211; living on in the memories of all of us who were lucky enough to witness his transcendent play.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today is the first day in the afterlife of wondrous Willie.\u00a0 The timing of his passing is particularly poignant.\u00a0 It is three weeks after Major League Baseball belatedly integrated Negro League baseball statistics into its official record, thereby adding 10 hits to Mays\u2019 total.\u00a0 Those hits occurred in 1948, when Willie began his major league career with the Birmingham Black Barons, who played in the last Negro League World Series that year, losing to the powerhouse Homestead Grays despite Willie\u2019s 17-year-old presence.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today is also Juneteenth, a national holiday recognizing the declaration in Texas on June 19,1865 that due to the North\u2019s winning of the Civil War, formerly enslaved Black people were now free.\u00a0 And tomorrow, the annual Field of Dreams game will be played on Rickwood Field, where Mays debuted 76 years ago.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today is not a day to do a deep dive into Willie\u2019s career.\u00a0 It is a day to celebrate the essence of Willie- an ebullient, dynamic, sparkling player who transformed professional baseball.\u00a0 Until we saw Willie play center field, we had not seen a basket catch deployed so successfully and gracefully.\u00a0 Nor did we see a catch so sublime that it could only be exceeded by a balletic throw&#8211; both made by Willie against the Cleveland Indians in the 1954 World Series.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My entry into the life of Willie Mays is through his teammate, roommate, and mentor Monte Irvin, whose biography I am currently writing.\u00a0 When Irvin died in 2016, Willie could not make Monte\u2019s memorial in New Jersey, but sent a heartfelt tribute to Irvin to be read at the event.\u00a0 I tried to interview Willie about Monte several times in the last few years but never succeeded.\u00a0 According to many accounts, Willie could be difficult to deal with.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I want to remember Willie through the legendary plays he made, many of them during a remarkable thirteen-year stretch, from 1954 through 1966, when Mays was perpetually one of the top two or three players in all of baseball.
