The bat still keeps rolling on the asphaltic surface filled with little grains of sand where little plants grow stubbornly through the scratches. At the deep edge, under the blue sky and the brightness of midmorning, the centerfielder runs desperately to the green bushes where the brown ball landed.

Many of the baseball followers recognize the three-base hit as the most exciting offensive play, even over the home run’s majesty that goes beyond the walls. The reasons have to do with the emotions and physical efforts displayed when a batted ball gives the runner the chance to arrive to third base. But there is a more exciting option that happens when the batted ball is very difficult to catch by the outfielders and the runner can arrive at home-plate to achieve an inside-the-park home run.

The climax of these kind of hits of course are the walk off inside-the-park homers. It’s a freezing bath of adrenaline either for the winner or the loser fans, players or writers, to follow the batter’s run while the outfielders try desperately to chase the ball. In the last 50 years at least 15 players have achieved that accomplishment in the Big Show: Roberto Clemente, Pittsburgh (07-25-1956), Dick Allen, Filadelfia (08-01-1966), Paul Schaal, California (08-02-1966), Reggie Jackson, Oakland (08-22-1971), Ted Sizemore, San Luis (08-07-1972), Richie Hebner, Pittsburgh (09-03-1973), Toby Harrah, Texas (04-11-1977), Amos Otis, Kansas City (05-12-1978), Willie Wilson (06-09-1979), Tim Teufel, Minnesota (06-24-1984), Bill Almon, Pittsburgh (05-11-1986), Bob Dernier, Filadelfia ( 05-15-1989), Marquis Grissom, Montreal (08-01-1994), Bobby Abreu, Filadelfia (08-27-2000), Ken Griffey Jr., Cincinnati (08-20-2001).

This kind of hit shows another sight of the game when who performs it is a pitcher, since his basic ability isn’t hitting home runs or having speed on the bases. Definitely baseball is a box of surprises where the pitcher’s offensive contribution enriches a lot the essence of the game. On August, 14th 1979, Joaquín Andújar smacked and inside-the-park two-run homer against Bill Lee in the second inning of a game played at the Astrodome, to determine the 2-1 victory of the Houston Astros over the Montreal Expos. On May, 19th1959, at Memorial Stadium, the Baltimore Orioles pitcher Billy O’Dell hit a two-run home run against Billy Pierce in the second inning. The Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1.

If this kind of hit is performed in a World Series game the excitement is bigger. Like what happened on October 10th, 1923. In the first game of the Classic between Yankees and Giants both from New York, in the top of the ninth inning, Casey Stengel hit the ball to the farthest alleys of Yankee Stadium to arrive home with the winning run for the Giants who won 5-4. There are another 8 ballplayers with inside-the-park homers ln World Series.

17 players have batted 2 inside-the-park home runs in the same game in the American League. The last two were: Dick Allen for the Chicago White Sox on July 31st, 1972 and Greg Gagne for the Minnesota Twins on October 4th, 1986. 32 players have achieved this fact in the National League. The last one: Hank Thompson for the New York Giants on August 16th, 1950.

Mickey Mantle hit 6 inside-the-park homers during his career despite having a painful leg. Reggie Jackson achieved 4 inside-the-park homers. He’s the only Oakland A’s player with more than one inside-the-park homer.

In 1901 Jim Sheckard hit inside-the-park homers during consecutive games played in consecutive days.

The lifetime record in MLB belongs to Sam Crawford who hit 13 inside-the-park homers for the Cincinnati Reds and 38 for the Detroit Tigers.

On August, 27th, 1977, Toby Harrah and Bump Wills hit back to back inside-the-park homers for the Texas Rangers at the top of the seventh inning of an 8-2 win before the Yankees.

In the Venezuelan Winter League, Bubba Morton is the only player who has hit 2 inside-the-park homers in one game. That happened on November 5th, 1960, at Ciudad Bolivar, in a game between Valencia and Oriente.

Other memorable inside-the-park homers were hit by Ivan Murrell for the Magallanes Navigators before the Caracas Lions on October 16th, 1971 and by Aurelio Monteagudo for the La Guaira Sharks before the Aragua Tigers on December 2nd , 1965. Both of the were grand slams.

“Go, go, go to home plate. Now it’s when he has finally found the ball. Come on. Run hard, slide, slide. That’s it. It’s an inside-the-park home run”. The runner raised a dusting cloud and sieved through the catcher’s legs who stood up waiting for the ball.

Alfonso is a writer whose work has been featured in Venezuela’s daily newspaper, El Nacional and in the magazine Gente en Ambiente, and he’s collaborated on several articles for newspapers, including the daily paper Tal Cual.
