{"id":3743,"date":"2010-03-26T13:51:56","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T20:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/?p=3743"},"modified":"2010-03-26T14:53:46","modified_gmt":"2010-03-26T21:53:46","slug":"after-years-of-fighting-injuries-randy-williams-is-having-an-unblemished-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/26\/after-years-of-fighting-injuries-randy-williams-is-having-an-unblemished-spring\/","title":{"rendered":"After Years of Fighting Injuries, Randy Williams Is Having an Unblemished Spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If <strong>Randy Williams <\/strong>turns out to be so fortunate as to spend all of 2010 with the <strong>Chicago White Sox<\/strong>, it will be his first such major league campaign, and he will turn 35 before fall.<\/p>\n<p>Williams certainly is off to a great start in following up on the second half of last season when he got into 25 games as a southpaw specialist for the Chisox, working 18 innings and posting a 4.58 ERA to go with an 0-1 record.\u00c2\u00a0 Williams has been scoreless in 9.1 innings during seven exhibition games, allowing six hits, fanning five and not issuing a single walk.<\/p>\n<p>The amazing part of Williams\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s story is this native of <strong>Harlingen<\/strong><strong>, TX<\/strong> only pitched 56 innings between the time the <strong>Chicago Cubs <\/strong>drafted him in 1997 until they released him five years later.\u00c2\u00a0 He had both shoulder and elbow surgery in that span, pitching in only two seasons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/indylogo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2992\" title=\"indylogo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/indylogo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a>The former <strong>Lamar College <\/strong>hurler (the same school that produced <strong>Kevin Millar<\/strong>) got back on track when he worked 42 games (5-2, 10 saves, 1.20, 1.93 opponent batting average) for <strong>Edinburg, TX<\/strong>, now of the <strong>United League<\/strong>, in 2002.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is just one more impressive Independent reclamation project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Injuries and Cuts<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not only has the injury bug taken <strong>Toronto\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Scott Richmond (Edmonton) <\/strong>and <strong>R. J. Swindle <\/strong>of <strong>Tampa Bay (Newark, NJ, Atlantic League,<\/strong> and <strong>Schaumburg, IL, Northern League) <\/strong>out of the start-of-season picture, but now <strong>Michel Hernandez\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>hopes of being the backup for catcher <strong>Matt Wieters <\/strong>at <strong>Baltimore <\/strong>have been stopped by a fractured right index finger that will sideline him for a month to six weeks.\u00c2\u00a0 Hernandez played his Indy baseball for <strong>Somerset<\/strong><strong>, NJ <\/strong>(Atlantic).<\/p>\n<p>Recent cuts from major league camps have included <strong>Josh Kinney, Pete Parise <\/strong>and <strong>Oneli Perez <\/strong>by <strong>St. Louis<\/strong><strong>, Brian Myrow <\/strong>by <strong>Pittsburgh<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>and <strong>Eric Gagne <\/strong>by the <strong>Dodgers. <\/strong>Gagne was released in a mutual decision.\u00c2\u00a0 Kinney and Parise started in the <strong>Frontier League<\/strong> at <strong>River<\/strong><strong> City (O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Fallon, MO) <\/strong>and <strong>Slippery Rock, PA, <\/strong>respectively, Myrow in the <strong>Northern League (Winnipeg)<\/strong> while Perez pitched in the <strong>Atlantic League (Newark, NJ)<\/strong> and <strong>Gagne <\/strong>the <strong>Can-Am League (Quebec).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Weber\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Still The Man<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While his major league fate remains in question\u00e2\u20ac\u201ddoubt may be a better description since the <strong>New York Yankees <\/strong>say any extra bat should come from the right side\u00e2\u20ac\u201d32-year-old rookie <strong>Jon Weber <\/strong>continues to be the most talked about former Independent player in either <strong>Florida <\/strong>or <strong>Arizona.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>The pesky left-handed-hitting outfielder, who spent all or part of three different seasons in the <strong>Northern League (Fargo, ND)<\/strong> and one full year in the <strong>Frontier League (Canton, OH)<\/strong>, went into play Friday hitting .545 (12-for-22) in 13 games.\u00c2\u00a0 We were fortunate enough to talk in this space about his 10 championship rings from minor league and international competition before spring exhibitions started, and now he has become one of the media centerpieces, with stories from many points including <em>Gannett <\/em>and <em>The New York Times.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d probably cry like a little kid,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he told <em>USA<\/em><em> Toda,y<\/em> if he made the 25-man roster.\u00c2\u00a0 His story is so reminiscent of another Fargo product, catcher <strong>Chris Coste<\/strong>, who challenged the .500 mark with his batting average in 2006, yet still did not get his first major league at-bat until <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>recalled him later that year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticleaguebaseball.com\/\">www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com<\/a> ADDED TO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indybaseballchatter.com\/\">www.IndyBaseballChatter.com<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>FOR ADDITIONAL INDEPENDENT BASEBALL COVERAGE?
