As Incentive, Former Players Setting a Hot Pace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fans anxiously awaiting Thursday night\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s season openers in the <strong>Atlantic League<\/strong> can look forward to the return of half of last season\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 14-man All-Star team although seven of the eight managers may not be quite so happy that three of them will be wearing the uniform of the back-to-back championship <strong>Somerset<\/strong><strong> Patriots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>In addition to having <strong>Matt Hagen <\/strong>returning at second base and <strong>Jeff Nettles <\/strong>at third, Somerset offers all-star outfielder <strong>Wayne Lydon<\/strong>, who pilfered 72 bases at <strong>Camden<\/strong><strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 York <\/strong>boasts two of the All-Star unit, catcher <strong>Salomon Manriquez<\/strong>, who was at <strong>Newark<\/strong>, and outfielder <strong>James Shanks, <\/strong>who played at <strong>Southern  Maryland<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Long Island <\/strong>returns Player of the Year <strong>Ray Navarrete<\/strong>, who had the utility position on the team, and <strong>Travis Garcia<\/strong> will once again man the shortstop position for <strong>Southern Maryland<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jay Gibbons on Terrific Run in PCL<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since many Atlantic League players are hoping to move along to greater financial rewards in major league organizations, they can find encouragement in how well some of the league\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s former players are fairing.\u00c2\u00a0 For that matter, the success helps the entire league sell itself to both the public and to players they are courting.<\/p>\n<p>The most dazzling performance\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand this is no understatement\u00e2\u20ac\u201dis being put up by onetime <strong>Long Island <\/strong>and <strong>Newark<\/strong> outfielder <strong>Jay Gibbons <\/strong>for the <strong>Los Angeles Dodgers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/strong> top farm club in <strong>Albuquerque. <\/strong>The 33-year-old Gibbons has 15 hits in his last six games, including back-to-back four-hit contests, to elevate his average to .471 (16-for-34).\u00c2\u00a0 The left-handed hitter leads the <strong>Pacific Coast League<\/strong> with an incredible .941 slugging percentage since 10 of his hits have been for extra bases with seven doubles and three home runs.\u00c2\u00a0 His 14 RBI rank second in the PCL.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>* * * *WANT MORE INDEPENDENT BASEBALL COVERAGE?\u00c2\u00a0 Check out our blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indybaseballchatter.com\/\">www.IndyBaseballChatter.com<\/a> * * * *<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Camden\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Nate Bump Solid for Phils<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nate Bump<\/strong>, who ran up an 8-2 record with a 2.49 ERA in 12 starts for <strong>Camden<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>early last season, is making the most of a new life in the <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>chain.\u00c2\u00a0 He had to convince the Phillies in spring training that at 33 he still had some of the ability that got him to the majors for most of 2003-05 with <strong>Florida<\/strong>, where he was in 113 games, all but two in relief.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>The onetime <strong>San Francisco <\/strong>first round draftee has turned in strong back to back starts for <strong>Lehigh Valley (Allentown, PA)<\/strong>, with the most recent one seven innings against <strong>Rochester <\/strong>in which the only run was unearned.\u00c2\u00a0 The former <strong>Penn<\/strong><strong> State<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>all-American got his first decision of the season by allowing only six hits and three walks.\u00c2\u00a0 Combined with a no-decision start five days earlier, Bump stands at 1-0, 2.08.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong> (<em>Subscriptions to the <\/em><em>Atlantic League Notebook <\/em>are available on a monthly or full season basis via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticleaguebaseball.com\/\">www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wirzandassociates.com\/\">www.WirzandAssociates.com<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Bob Wirz also writes a weekly column, the <em>Independent Baseball Insider<\/em>, as well as a blog, www.IndyBaseballChatter.com.
