The winning team would go to the World Series. The Pirates manager brought Dave Giusti to the Riverfront stadium mound in the midst of a deafening environment of whistles, shouts and screams.<\/p>\n<p>Johnny Bench stayed looking to the rows at the top of the central stands, until the chief umpire, Augie Donatelli, called him to bat. Bench smacked a delivery of Giusti over the left field wall before the happiness of the fans, to tie the game.<\/p>\n<p>While Bench rounded the horn he fixed his eyes to  the top of the stand and when he stepped on home-plate he opened his right hand to that place in the stands, while he was congratulated by his teammates.<\/p>\n<p>The Reds won that game when Bob Moose delivered a wild pitch that allowed George Foster score the winning run.<\/p>\n<p>In the dugout Bench declared to the journalists that he had kept looking at the top of the stands because he knew his mother was there.
