Former Major League hurler Dick Drago will appear on “What’s On Second: The Seamheads.com Radio Hour” on Monday, May 17 at 11:00 PM Eastern (8:00 Pacific).\u00c2\u00a0 Drago began his major league career with the expansion Kansas City Royals in 1969 after spending four years in the Detroit Tigers’ minor league system, where he went 50-41 with a 2.69 ERA in 112 appearances.\u00c2\u00a0 He tied Moe Drabowski for second place in team wins with 11 in his first season with the Royals, then peaked as a starter in 1971 when he went 17-11 with a 2.98 ERA and finished fifth in Cy Young voting.<\/p>\n
He spent two more years as a starter with the Royals before being traded to Boston after the 1973 season for fellow hurler Marty Pattin.\u00c2\u00a0 In his first season with the Red Sox, Drago split his time between the rotation and the bullpen before becoming Boston’s closer in 1975.\u00c2\u00a0 He led the team with 15 saves, good for fifth in the American League, then saved two more games in the postseason and posted a 1.04 ERA in four appearances against the Oakland A’s and Cincinnati Reds.<\/p>\n
From 1976-1981, Dick pitched for the Angels, Orioles, Red Sox (again), and Mariners, with whom he retired after the ’81 season.\u00c2\u00a0 He led the Red Sox in saves again in 1979 with 13, then saved 3 and five games, respectively for Boston and Seattle in his last two seasons.\u00c2\u00a0 Drago finished his 13-year career with a record of 108-117 with 58 saves and a 3.62 ERA in 519 games.<\/p>\n
