Anyway through the course of history there have happened exceptions to the rules. From this point of view I can suggest that institutions like The Baseball Hall of Fame in Copperstown and the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame take at least the consideration of discussing of creating a Committee for “Exceptional cases”. In this Committee it would be discussed what can be done to recognize those ballplayers that at least played in 5 seasons but they couldn’t keep playing because of accidental reasons.

In that respect I would suggest to study the cases of Isaías Latigo Chávez in the Venezuelan Winter League and Herb Score, Tony Conigliaro, Don Wilson, J.R Richard in MLB. If there are more names in the same circumstances I think the Committee would study the too. These are just the names that I remember the most.

El Látigo in just 5 seasons in the Venezuelan Winter League and the San Francisco Giants farm system, was able of transforming a losing ball team into a competitive one each time he took the mound for the Magallanes Navigator in the middle sixties. Despite leaving a lifetime record of 19-24, many of those losses or no decisions were games that ended by an edge of one or two runs. In four of those 5 seasons, El Látigo was the most wanted reinforcement player for the play offs. He was champion with the La Guaira Sharks in the 1964-65 season and with the Caracas Lions in the 1967-68 season. 41 years later he still appears in the Magallanes stats for the best ten pitchers in the franchise history. El Látigo set a record of 17 complete games in a row with the Decatur Commodores of the Midwest League A in 1965. That year he also led the league in starts (23), complete games (20), shutouts (7). He left a 51-34 balance with an ERA of 3.30 in the Minor Leagues. On September 9th, 1967 he made his debut in the Big Show with the San Francisco Giants against the Chicago Cubs and he was able to put out Billy Williams and Ernie Banks. On September 30th, 1967, he got his only win in MLB before the Philadelphia Phillies. On January 23rd, 1968; while he played as a reinforcement player for the Caracas Lions, he established a record for the post-season as he retired in a row 25 batters of the Valencia Industrials. He only accepted a base hit from Gustavo Gil in the first inning to win that game 3-0. Maybe a better image of what Isaías Látigo Chávez meant to the venezuelan baseball is attached to a Sunday morning in 1964 when after beating the Caracas Lions 5-1, El Látigo had to get back to the field, because the fans, many children included, asked for him. Also in another Sunday morning of 1968 when he defeated a team of big leaguers from Puerto Rico 5-1. Roberto Clemente played in that team and batted 0 for 4 against El Látigo. The journalists interviewed the puertorrican star and he answered: “Roberto Muñoz has a great fastball but El Látigo has more variety in his deliveries.”

About Herb Score it must be said that despite of only having 2 remarkable seasons of his 8 in MLB, he has the lifetime record of less hits allowed per 9 innings with 5.8 in 1956. Besides that, Score was the AL struckout leader in 1955 (245) and 1956 (263) this year he also led the league in shutouts (5). He also led the AL in struckouts per 9 innings in 1955 (9.7) and 1956 (9.5). Ted Williams defined him as the fastest southpaw he ever faced. Nobody will ever know what Herb Score could have done as a pitcher in MLB if not for the Gil McDougald line drive that hit him on his face on May 7th, 1957.

It’s an act of justice to recognize Tony Conigliaro’s intensity with his bat and his glove. He was the home run leader of the American League in his second season (1965). In 1967 he became one of the youngest players who hit 100 home runs in MLB. That year Tony C was an important piece of “The Impossible Dream” as long as he played. Many people still comment on what would have been the result of the 1967 World Series if Conigliaro had played for the Red Sox. After the beaning on his left eye in August 1967, Tony C won the “Come back player of the year” award in 1969 by hitting 20 homers and batting in 82 runs in 141 games. In 1970 Tony C batted in 116 runs, scored 89 runs, hit 36 homers with complete vision in just an eye.

Don Wilson at least won 10 games in all the seasons between 1967 and 1974. He only didn’t do it in 1966 when he only played one game. In all his seasons but 1969, Wilson kept his ERA below 3.30. Only in 1970 Wilson didn’t get at least 100 struckouts. He hurled 2 no-hitters, 6 two-hitters, and 8 three-hitters. Besides Wilson collected 23 games where at least he got 10 struckouts. Wilson passed away on January 5 th, 1975 because of poisoning with carbon monoxide.

J.R. Richard achieved at least 18 wins in four of his ten seasons in MLB. He was the ERA leader of the National League in 1979 with 2.71. He was the NL struckout leader in 1978 (303) and 1979 (313), he was the number one pitcher in the NL in allowed hits per 9 innings with 6.8 (1976), 6.3 (1978) and 6.8 (1979). He also led the NL in struckouts to walks ratio in 1979 with 3.19. Richard stopped pitching in 1980 because of a stroke due to a blood clot in his neck.

El Látigo in the Venezuelan winter league and Score, Conigliaro, Wilson , Richard in MLB reached important achievements during the short time they played professional baseball. This premise along with the fact that they had to stop playing baseball because of fortuitous circumstances, should be an incentive for exceptional consideration to a Committee for exceptional cases named by each Hall of Fame.

Alfonso’s work has been featured in Venezuela’s daily newspaper, El Nacional and in the magazine Gente en Ambiente, and he’s collaborated on several articles for newspapers, including the daily paper Tal Cual.
