In an amazingly ironic twist, Kris Honel <\/strong>hurled a no-hit game for Chico<\/strong>, CA<\/strong> on the same day Jose Lima <\/strong>passed away.\u00c2\u00a0 The two pitchers were traded for each other last season with Lima moving from Long Beach<\/strong> <\/strong>to Edmonton<\/strong> <\/strong>in the Golden League <\/strong>swap.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Honel, a first-round draft choice of the Chicago White Sox <\/strong>as a teenager in 2001, allowed only three walks while striking out 10 Tijuana Cimarrones <\/strong>hitters in a seven-inning gem in Mexico<\/strong>. <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They had no answer for what he was dealing today,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d praised Outlaws <\/strong>Manager Garry Templeton,<\/strong> the onetime major league shortstop.<\/p>\n

Tijuana is the early leader in attendance in its maiden season in the league, averaging 3,396 per game, although the team has dropped its first five games with a horrendous 12.46 earned run average.<\/p>\n

Female Knuckleballer Debuts Saturday<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The much-anticipated debut of Japanese <\/strong>knuckleball pitcher Eri Yoshida <\/strong>comes up Saturday when Chico<\/strong> <\/strong>and Tijuana<\/strong> <\/strong>do battle again, this time in Northern California<\/strong>. <\/strong>The teen-ager will be the first woman to play pro baseball in a United States-<\/strong>based league since Ila Borders <\/strong>was in the Northern League <\/strong>in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

One Strike Away From American Association Gem<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It could easily have been a two no-hit week in Independent circles, but Shreveport-Bossier (LA) Captains <\/strong>hurler Osvaldo Rodriguez <\/strong>came up one out short in an American Association <\/strong>game in Fort Worth, TX<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 He had a 3-2 count on 5-foot-7 Cats <\/strong>rookie Jeremy Sauceda <\/strong>before the Henderson (AR) State <\/strong>alum slapped a two-run double into the gap in right-center.\u00c2\u00a0 Leftfielder Palmer Karr <\/strong>was credited with two outstanding catches to keep the no-hitter going for the 25-year-old right-hander, who came into the season with a 23-13 career record in major league organizations.<\/p>\n

One home-opening series worth paying extra attention to this weekend will be in Joliet<\/strong>, IL<\/strong> where the Northern League\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s JackHammers<\/strong> have a new field boss with a successful past, 2009 Frontier League Manager of the Year Chad Parker, <\/strong>an ambitious and experienced new general manager, Jamie Toole<\/strong>, and an owner, Pete Ferro, <\/strong>who is catching up on past bills.\u00c2\u00a0 Attendance has been dropping and Joliet has not had a winning season since 2004.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153So we thought it was time to bring in some fresh ideas and some fresh thinking,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Ferro told The Chicago Tribune.<\/em><\/p>\n

The elaborate story, not always easy for an Independent Baseball team to get in a market the\u00c2\u00a0 size of Chicago, was a meaningful step.\u00c2\u00a0 So were some billboards which proved controversial to some, but brought still more attention.\u00c2\u00a0 Now it is time to see the results at the box office and on the diamond.<\/p>\n
