Whether the Panthers earn an at-large spot or not, Cory Brownsten\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s baseball career will continue this summer.<\/p>\n<p>After earning first-team All-Big East honors, the former Webster Yankee and Monroe Community College star is ready to take the next step to the professional ranks.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That has always been my goal,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Brownsten. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I want to go to the next level.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Brownsten proved himself more than worthy the past season. In 48 starts, the senior catcher hit .395 with 17 extra-base hits, including three home runs and 48 RBI.<\/p>\n<p>Brownsten credited assistant coach, Ryan Leahy, with helping him improve this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I switched my swing,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d commented the Lockport, New York native. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Coach helped me shorten my swing while keeping my stance.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The adjustment paid dividends as Brownsten improved his average 170 points over last season. In the process, Bronwsten has earned the attention of pro scouts. He will work out for the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies in anticipation of next month\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s amateur draft.<\/p>\n<p>The right-handed hitter walked 16 times, stole three bases in six attempts and finished with a slugging percentage of .530.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s great to be a part of this team,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d added Brownsten.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are the number one hitting team in the nation.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>As impressive as his offensive statistic may be, Brownsten\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most defining number lies somewhere between 1.8 and 1.9. That is the catcher\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Pop time \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the measurement used by scouts to represent the time elapsed between when the ball hits the catcher\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mitt and when he releases, and it hits the second baseman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s glove. Brownsten\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time is consistent with average Major League catchers. He has maintained this stat since his days at MCC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MCC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-5479\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/MCC-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153MCC was the best decision I ever made,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d noted Brownsten. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Monroe and the Webster Yankees prepared me for playing in the Big East. (MCC coach Pete) Coach Dawes made me what I am today behind the plate.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>In his sophomore season with the Tribunes, Brownsten earned Junior College D2 Defensive-Player-of-the-Year honors to go with a Gold Glove. He garnered first-team All-American, All-District and All-Region hitting .390 with seven home runs, 50 RBI and a slugging percentage of .615. MCC finished the 2008 season third in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That was a special team,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Tribune coach, Mike Kelly. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Pat Urckfitz has already gone pro, and I wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be surprised if there aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t more guys from that team that move to the next level.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Brownsten earned all-league honors with the Webster Yankees in 2008. In 27 games, he hit .272, seven extra-base hits and 19 RBI.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I got to learn so much with MCC and Webster,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d added Brownsten. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It was a great experience.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell if MCC and Webster fans get a chance to see Cory Brownsten play in another uniform.<\/p>\n<p>The Webster Yankees open the 2010 New York Collegiate Baseball League season Friday, June fourth at Allegany County. The home opener is two days later, Sunday, June sixth.
